It's Offical: My Goose is cooked?

Well the swelling in my knee has continued.. I can only really run ~ 1.5-2 miles. Saw Doc again today and have arthroscopy scheduled for May 31st. Diagnosis is suspect medial meniscus tear. That seals the deal on IMLP. Throw in the 8-10 week recovery and I'm likely out any event this year. May try to Aquabike the Great Floridian Tri in October. Now to get my $150 back from WTC. All in all this season has SUCKED. I've been resting the knee intermittently for last 6 months and in the process have gain 10 pounds and I did not need to gain any more. ARRGH!!

  • sorry to hear that. 2 years ago i had medial meniscus surgery on both knees. One in February (ran a 13.1 in may) and after some pain in the other knee, had it done in June. Was able to have a great race (an oly) < 3 months later. On the upside, i am now running better than ever. I wish you a speedy recovery. One thing that i was able to do during that time was work on my swimming.
  • So Sorry to hear this Dewey. Focus on your recovery and how good you'll feel when its done.
  • Dewey,

I know it's not what you wanted to hear but remember to focus on the positive like being able to train  with no swelling and pain.  It's also hard to keep the body comp in check when not doing exercise I know, but try to focus on keeping the with the weight off and if posssible reducing through using a calorie counter like calorie wise.

  • Until it happens to you things get real interesting, so how are you letting this define you ? I could tell you war stories/ personal shit but I wont you'll heal raceing is like a bag of chips reach in and grab another.
  • Dewey, thanks for sharing and all thanks for supporting. Hard, hard place to be but as others have mentioned, upside is good once you are healthy. Imagine what THAT will feel like???? Please keep us posted!
  • Dewey: Talk to your doctor and see if you can get a PT prescription for Pre-hab to prepare you for the surgery and help you recover fatser.
  • Dewey, sorry to hear that...recover hard...you will be back better than ever in no time...
  • Thanks all for the words of support. I'm actually happy that I will get some resolution to this issue that's been chewing at me for 6 months. Was just wishing it was earlier this year but that is life. I know that there is a bigger picture here, may not know what it is right now but I will.

My biggest concern is I eat when I'm stressed and the workouts help relive the stress. Now worried that I'm going to expand like a balloon. I'm spending the next few weeks before surgery trying to get control of the big hole in my face and see If I can't get my waist line down a little. Doc said no running until i drop some weight so thats a good moviator.

Also will take this summer to finally get some help with my swimming. Already signed up for a small group class for stroke development.

Finally I will also get back active on the boards. Been hanging back lately as watching others was a little depressing while I was struggling, unable to hit my workouts or in some cases do them. Now I will have to train vicariously through the team, for a little while any way.

Thanks again folks for lifting my spirits.

@ Penny great though on the pre-hab. I will contact Doc tomorrow to see what he thinks.

  • Truly a bummer. But I will see you at the GFT. Gonna do the aquabike + 6 mile run as RR#2 for IMCOZ. I did the same in 2010 for IMAZ. Good luck with the surgery.
  • Dewey: I had to have my right knee scoped in 2009. I did the Paris Marathon knowing I was going to probably have surgery after. It was to the point that there was pain with every step. It is so nice not to have that now.

Decide what your post-rehab goal is - both in fitness and weight. Write it down. Visualize it - vividly. Keep that in mind.

I know it is really easy to eat when stressed (one of my triggers, too). I know you've heard it - but you HAVE to find other ways to deal with it. Maybe look at this as an opportunity to learn those things. Meditation? Yoga/stretching? Journaling? I've had clients have success with having to write a page in a journal before getting something to eat.
  • Paul glad to hear there will be an fellow EN'er at GFT. Doing the aquabike no less.

Penny: Great suggestions again. I'll definitely work on them. Thanks.
  •  @Dewey,

I had my knee scoped last July, and I was back on my bike in 2 weeks(Not hard workouts, but was back on the road. )  I was back to the ABP rides.  I was back to doing 10Ks within 3 months, in fact, I PR'd my first 10K back to racing by 2 minutes.   So the outlook is good.

Yes, it was hard being at an event and watching people run.  I went to support my wife.

I gained only 10lbs. and am back close to what I was before surgery.  So keep the spirits up.  The future is bright.  Just as others have said, think of what it will be like to run pain-free!

  • So how did the arthroscopy go? What did you find out? What does the rest of your season look like. PUT DOWN THE JELLY ROLL!
  • Steve medial menicsal tear, repaired. Mild thinning of articular cartilage medially Doc says of little concern, also mild cartilage thinning in the groove on the femur that the knee cap rides in as well as the knee cap. That will slow me a little in years to come and the reason that Doc wants my weight to drop 30-40 lbs before I start back running.

Should be back in the pool next week and hopefully light biking by middle of the month. Was looking at possibly Greater Floridan Aqua bike in Oct but that is tentative based on recovery and weight loss. Will see if Doc will approved the Insanity program to help with the weight loss but I think there is a lot of jumping with that system so if not will be good with bike and swim. Will also get with RnP to set up Aqua bike training plan once Doc clears me. Thanks for checking in BTW Jelly Roll is DOWN!!!! getting excited to get back into training.
  • Good to hear that you are on the mend. Without a season to worry about you can focus on weight loss. That will make you unstaoppable next year!
