RR for Eagleman
My Eagleman race rehearsal got a little hosed due to some family committments, etc... I had to do my 6-mi run off the trainer during week 6 (of 12), but rode the actual Eagleman course on Sunday (week 7 of 12). The run the previous week was uneventful... nutrition and pacing felt good, so not much to report there.
I've ridden the Eagleman course several times before (ahh, the smell of roadkill...) but this was the first time I was actively trying to pace and target speeds, etc. I am NOT, unfortunately, training with power yet. Next year.
Anyway, I had a hard time starting the ride in Zone 2... I was working pretty hard from the start, but felt good. Although, I should probably focus on going out a little easier... more on that in a bit.
I am doing Infinit every 15 minutes, so I basically finish a bottle every hour. My mix has 240 calories, I think. Maybe a little high for a HIM? Maybe I should think about remixing it with less calories? I didn't have any issues stomach-wise, but those don't usually show up for me until the run. Last year during EMan, I went with the same nutrition plan on the bike and did Coke and water on the run. Worked beautifully for me since the stomach can and has been an issue for me in the past. I plan on taking the same approach this year, but if anyone has comments on the calorie content of my mix, I am all ears.
The biggest question I have for all of the experience out there is about pacing on this particular course. I feel that the course tends to be tougher in the 2nd half because it can get windy. So, you are always having to push harder on the way back than the way out. My run is so-so, so I feel like I should go hard where I can get the extra speed even though I may not be riding a negative split due to the wind. Last year, it turned out the wind was not bad at all, but when I rode the course on Sunday, I was averaging 20-22 mph until I got to Egypt Road (for those of you that know the course!)... that's where the wind typically picks up, and I was working hard to sustain 18-19 mph.
So, I just need to figure out what the best strategy is for this ride pacing-wise. If anyone has comments, I would love to hear them!
Comments
just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on my pacing and/or nutrition above... thanks!
As far as nutrition you can always call the folks at Infinit and they can dial you in on their product. You can also try other products.
Maybe even sip water with your Infinit mix i.e., two bottle set up this will reduce the amount of product your body is trying to
digest and is hitting you on your run.
Your bike , since your not using power , next is suppose to be at your target HR. If you are not using a HR monitor your RPE is the goal
to maintain. Forget the speed it means nothing if you allow that to dictate how you will race on your bike your cooking with road kill for your run
and that may come back to bother you.
yep, it can get hot. Hate that. Last year wasn't too bad, but I am praying for cooler weather and cooler water temps this year
Thanks for the response!

Patrick did a 'Crucible' report on my first Eagleman race rehearsal here where he gives some further hints;
