Military

I just registered for a SC triathlon. This race appealed to me because it supports wounded Marines and it is sort of a come back to racing , since I had a Pulmonary Embolism January.

I'm retired military 28 yrs. I entered under the military category. I was wondering is that category was just for active duty folks ? No direction with entering in the race overview and you can't deny the fact I put in a few years. Anyone have an input with this ?

  • David, I retired w 26 yrs. I dont enter the military division but only because I want to compete in my age group. I doubt anyone will object especially since your service is likely to far exceed that of any active duty triathletes in the race.
  • @David - First off, glad to hear the PE recovery is allowing you to race this season. I don't think anyone will have heartburn with you entering the Military category. Who know? You may be it. But I am like Paul. Even though I am still Active Duty (on orders as a Reservist), I enter my age group. I figure that gives me a better chance of a 'podium' finish, especially since I just aged up to the 45-49 AG.

Thread tangent -- what did you do for Uncle Sam?
  • I've never encountered a registration situation like this, but I don't enter/check the "military" category on anything, as I assume it means active duty.

  • @ All thank you for your input. Good point as to entering my age group as I'm getting to the pointy end of the stick, so to speak. Perhaps I may change up when I pick up my packet.... or better yet do both.
The Coast Guard has a training base there and I'm sure their presence will be strong in support of the cause. Lots of testosterone there boy especially with the rescue swimmers.

@ All , thank you for your service !!!

@ Joe, I served 6 years in the Navy in San Diego. I got out moved up to LA area and joined the Coast Guard for 22 years. I transferred to the right coast completing my career in Atlantic City right nest to Harras Casino. For the most part I did Search and Rescue with some Law enforcement thrown in. And you ?
  • Our local Joint Base Lewis Mchord has an annual Triple Threat series (1 sprint tri a month for three months) on base. The Military option there is just a lower entry fee for active duty; they all go into the AGs (or "Elite" category) if they like.

Yep, David, enter your AG, and clean their clocks.

  • Hey David! I just did the Hits Triathlon 70.3 in Napa, CA and they not only have a military division, but also extend a discount. When I asked about who qualified, the lady said it was for anyone active, reserve, or retired. I did 12 years on active duty with the Coast Guard (MSTC) and am now a civilian employee at MSU Portland. I didn't really qualify for their military discount, but thanked them for offering it to those members.

I wish the CG would extend the Athlete of the Year award to civilians, too and offer up a Kona slot! Maybe that'd be a long shot, but it sure would be fun!
  • First of all, thank you all for your service.

@David, I see you're in NJ as well. 2 weeks ago, a group of us did the NJ Devilman not too far from you. I run a charity team called "Team ReserveAid" that uses endurance sports to raise money for Reservists and National Guard members suffering financial hardships. www.reserveaid.org/TeamRA We currently have a guy running a 155mi ultra in Jordan. We have 2 doing IMTX next week. We have about 35 doing the Patriot Half in June and about 30 of us doing IMNYC in August. I think we are up to 6 or 7 of us from Team ReserveAid in da Haus. None of us are really at the pointy end of anything (yet). Good luck in your race and let me know if you ever want to join us...
