Time-Trialling in late OS & In-Season

Newbie question - I have a big local scene that focuses on time-trialling, its all some of the local roadies do. My local road club for example runs weekend & mid-week 10's (10 milers) and 25's and some longer events as well (up to 50milers) - Phil Graves finished 3rd in the UK national TT's over 100miles as an example.

The '25' seems very british with a focus on getting under the hour as a mark of respectibility!

Wonder how, or if, these kind of efforts/races could be worked into a program? Could be a good opportunity to get off the trainer and experiment with pace & bike set-up, especially for 25miler - be a good FTP effort for an hour, have the wife pick up the bike and for me to run home!

Only downer to this is that all the TT's are down the local highway with cars passing at 80mph, kinda spooky!

Done a few over the years as an 'athlete' (standard road bike etc) - always fun to catch someone who starts ahead of you (your 'minute-man' ) who's on a tricked-out TT bike, skin suit and aero-lid! Good value's entertainment on a summers evening for the 'pay on the line' entry of GBP 1.50! (2 bucks?)

Anyone do similar over the pond?

  • We have a great TT series down here. 40K distance on the same course, run 3 different times (June, July, Aug). I will definately be trying to work in the June/July gig (although July might be a bit late). But Aug is way too close to IMWI and the ROI won't be there to work in that race.

For the OS it's a great workout! Heck, 1 hour of FTP- there's your FTT! It's pretty easy in the OS to just swap out a workout for that race. During the "IN" Season however it can be a little tougher- you need to be mindful of where it's falling within the whole season and what you are giving up by doing that race vs something else.
  • Sure.  My local club has a Tuesday night TT series.  The course is a slightly hilly 11 miles, and it's run every Tuesday night, starting in the spring.  Most weeks last year, while I was on the buildup to my Half, I was able to incorporate the TT into the workout in some way, shape, or form.  I occasionally found myself having to get there early, do a warmup and a bunch of 30/30's before the TT, but all was good.  Still tons of fun and a great workout.

I've yet to see what the Tuesday bike sessions look like in the IM plan, so I'll wait and see whether I can incorporate them this year, but I hope to.

  •  I would think it's a good idea to embed some TT's in your schedule. It's a great workout and it is exactly what you need to be doing well on race day,,, I wish we had something like that in the Dallas area (we have Tue&wed night crits,,,)

If you can ride to the event from home and back @ a tempo/z3 pace, that's even better...

Some guys even do a brick run right after the tt

  • @Tomer, you've done TTs here in the DFW area. Aren't there some up in Denton area and also out east in Royse City? Even one at Joe Pool in June (that usually conflicted with my bike being shipped to IMCDA) thru ironhead.

I'd like to find those schedules for this year, I'd love to try my hand at them.
