bike wobble with HED H3 on the front.

Did 112 miles in Coeur d’Alene this past week.

Had my custom Zinn titanium tri bike. (I am 6 foot 6 inches).      I used my normal rear disc (zipp 101 with wheelcover).           New to me hed h3 on the front.                  Have a good professional fit without issues until now.

First time on the road with the hed H3 front.      Signficant high speed wobbles even at 35 mph.    Doing all the Rich riding tips.     I generally have good riding skills.    (5:30 bike at Regensburg including a long and steep downhill in the rain).

Recently got shorter cranks which meant putting the seat up a bit.

So during the day I got a bit better with the wobbles with relaxing.   However still seems more unstable than with my previous zipp 101 on the front. 40 mph not doable.   Carefully trying to get onto the brake hoods while keeping same overall position as in the aero bars but can’t brake without getting unstable.  More stable in the aero bars at high speed (as per normal) but still wobbly.

Thighs against toptube, weight off the seat, etc.           Still having problems.

Get rid of the H3?

Back to my front zipp 101?

Upgrade to front zipp 404?        (if I can afford).

Other options?

Fork seems aligned, headset is tight, wheels are true(The H3 is new to me but used and seems true in all dimnesions), etc.

I seem to be going faster on the flats wtih the set up so would hate to say goodbye to the front hed h3.

Thanks.

  • Robin - I would get that HED3 checked. I rode my HED3 front at IMCDA 2010 ... no wobbles there or anywhere ... ever. If the wheel is true, then it might be reacting with your fork in some flaky way in which case I would borrow another wheel.
  • H3's do have a natural wobble to them but it's mostly a non-issue. I agree with Paul that you might want to try another one to see if your wheel is jacked up somehow.
  • @Robin, I had a similar issue with my shakeout ride at CDA last year with my rented 808. Then I realized it was because my wheel up front was deeper than my wheel in back. Do you have a wheel cover? Put it on and try again. I bet you will be fine. I was for race day.
  • H3 wheels are never totally true.

They have side to side and radial wobble that can't be adjusted (no spokes!). If you poke around, you can find sales on their "B-quality" stock that has more flaw than they intend.

After you have it checked out for safety, you may just have to decide whether to live with the H3 wobble or not.

  • The variance from true should be written on the inside of the clincher rim.
  • This may sound pretty weak, BUT, I purchased set of HED Jet60s, put them on and headed out for RR. The first downhill OMG the wheel wobble simply freaked me out. I struggled all day. Next morning I took the wheel off, eye-balled it, put it back on nice and tight and the wobble dissappeared.

  •  Ok thx all.

Had my rear wheel trued.    Zipp 101 i run with the wheelcover..

I'll mess with the front h3.

Having bad dreams though.    May use my mavic cosmic carrbone sl on the front for confidence.
