Big bike week timing

I have a question on timing of the big bike week and/or big tri week for a November IM, specifically IMFL.  At what point do I insert these into IM training? Is it recomended to do both or only one?  Thx.

  • surprised that no one has answered this yet! I am considering the same issue as well.

last year i did a big bike week in Aspen that was 7 weeks in front of IMAZ. this year i am thinking of doing another big bike week, here on the east coast and my thinking is that it will be 6 weeks in front of the IM.

anyone have any thoughts on this?
I would also be interested in knowing what people think are good numbers to be thinking about in terms of mileage for a big bike week, both in total and in miles per day... i plan on going out and hitting some pretty major climbs including re-visiting the Gleason/ American Zofingen course for the week.
  • This, and related questions, are becoming far more common. We will start a "Big Bike / Tri Week" thread to capture all of this, as it's a bit all over the place, including some stuff in the wiki.

Short answer is that this is a good question, one that lots are asking, but we need to consolidate our guidance to get everyone on the same page.

  • I actually came on to ask the same question. I will be jumping into Week 10 of the Int IM plan starting next Monday leading up to IMNYC. Weeks 10 & 11 will be too hectic to get a Big Bike/Tri Week in but I'd be open after that. With wife, kids, work, etc, I need to plan this level of training as far in advance as possible so I'd like to know when (or if) to plug one or both in considering I'll only have about six weeks (weeks 12-17) to play with. I look forward to the guidance once prepared.
