Training with Power - What do I need, the basics?

To all of my endurance nation friends,

I am a power novice.  I have watched the power seminar videos in the house and I am excited to start to train with power.

Can anyone help me with what are the basic things I need to purchase in order to do this and the current options?

I want to get the biggest bang for the dollar.

Suggestions?

Thank you!

  • Dennis, maybe you can give a little more information about your current equipment and that could help with the bang for the buck. Meaning, what type of bike/bikes do you have? Do you own race wheels? There are a few types of power meters with the main ones either being in the rear hub of your wheel or one that will be on your crank. Your current equipment will effect your purchase.
  • Thanks Tucker,

I own a tri bike and a road bike.  I have cateye computers on each bike to help with speed, distance, time and cadence.  I am almost exclusively training on my trainer with my tri bike over the winter months.  It gets cold and icy in SW Virginia.  I have race wheels for my tribike that I only use during races.  They are a zipp takeoff with 50mm (I think) deep rims on both front and rear wheels.

  • Rich wrote an introductory  Wiki entry on power meters within EN. The basics? WKO+ software for analysis, a head unit for readouts while cycling, a power meter (PowerTap, Quarq, SRM, or iBike), and a trainer (for those indoor rides).  Some of us have the resources to have two options, a CompuTrainer for indoor work, and an on-bike power meter for outdoors. The minimum cost for the above "basics" will be north of $1,000. As to the specifics of which one of each to buy, these forums are filled with opinion. I suggest searching for the following terms: Joule, Power Tap, Garmin XT, Quarq, SRM, iBike. The combinations and permutations are almost endless, and we all have strong opinions about which is best.

  • There is a lot of good quality stuff on ebay and craigslist, so if the cost starts to frighten you, there are options image
