Bike Week input?

Next week is my first-ever BBW.  This is a hybrid of what is in the wiki + what others have done.  I don't have time off from work so it is structured to fit my work schedule (hence 3 weekdays off).  The terrain would mostly be 2/3 flat, 1/3 hills (rollers & climbs).

SAT - 40 miles (30' z1, remainder z2)

SUN - 60 miles (30' z1, as much as possible z3)

MON - OFF

TUE - 70 miles (30' z1, remainder z2)

WED - OFF

THU - 40 miles (all z1 recovery)

FRI - OFF

SAT  - 100 miles (30' z1, remainder z2 - race pace rehearsal)

SUN - 50 miles (30' z1, remainder z3)

TOTAL = 360 miles (23-25 hrs)

Am I on course?  Too much....too easy?  Thanks!

  • Considering you have M/W/F off I'd up the intensity of T/TH to Z3 except for WU/ CD and breaks.
  • Right on, Tucker. That's what I like to hear. The wiki mostly keeps the rides in z1-2, but this is my first BBW so I don't know what's too much or too little.  I'll be doing lots o' mountain riding so that should help me hold the z3.

  • I would recommend riding hard also. The whole point of the BBW is load up the TSS and get a healthy training dose. Ride to easy and you may dillute the benefit...

I see you did the Pasadena Tri. I was there too. What did you think of that bike leg? Crazy dangerous, eh?
  •  Personally i would be careful with high intensity.     O.7 for over 300 miles is plenty tss.     Maybe increase the intensity if tolerated towards the end of the week.

  • I was diagnosed with BRONCHITIS so I'm delaying my BBW for at least a week, giving me time to ponder it more.

@Robin - I recently tested; and my new z3 is my old z4.  Trying to get my head wrapped around it, but the plan is to push a little the first 3 days, recover a bit, then put all my cards into executing a "perfect" 100 miles at race pace.  The icing will be whatever I have left to put into the day after as an ABP ride.

@Dino - YES, I agree!  My experiences with reverse tris (Pasadena & Los Alamitos) have always included chaotic bike legs, where newbies on beach cruisers and mt bikes seem to weave all over the place.  I'm not one to scream ON YOUR LEFT, but not only did I have to resort to that a few times, I also had to call out "On your Right" a few times as well image  I like looped courses though, so it was fun nevertheless.

  • As long as you can rest as planned, you have permission to up intensity. but note that even the best plans show issues / cracks by the end of the BBW. it's 80% learning / 20% execution your first time around! image
