Hernia

Hi People. I'm wondering if any other ENers have discovered a hernia, & happily made a full recovery? Anything that helped? Do the support straps help? How long is the recovery? Is surgery necessary?

Its not painful but still,,,,its a lump that is not supposed to be there ! & no, there will not be any pictures !

  • It would seem that there are not that many hernia victims in the Haus. That's a good thing as they tend to be a pain,,,in various areas. I'm currently a fountain of knowledge on them, particularly inguinal hernia and as I'm scheduled for surgery next Thursday morning,,,not that I'm worried or anything. Doctor has advised that a hernia can occur in women and men but are far more common in men as a weakness is created in the lower tummy when the testicles descend into the scrotum, the success rate is 97% for either open or laparoscopic repair methods. The Doctors also advised the advantage of the latter being quicker and less painful recovery and I'll be back inl training within two to four weeks. Hmm, I'll wait and see on that one. I'll be fine just as long as I don't see any needles or scalpels or bandages or blood, especially mine ! I'm not worried, not at all. I'm a 5 times Ironman, I fear nothing,,,,,,,,

  • Terri, thanks for no pictures !!

Sorry you have to go through this you live long enough you will have to go through..... something.
Heal well the body is awesome and will recover just don't go out and run 5 miles on your first run just because you can.
Now you know what to do with a Hernia stick around someone will post that they too have develped one and you BE the go to peep....

BTW is it winter there now ?
  • Yes, winter in Oz. I don't mind winter, open fires, a drop of red wine from the Barossa,,,hmm. And yes, good weather for convalescence ! Cheers.
  • Terry, I have had three inguinal hernia surgerys, each one about ten years apart. The first was on my right side, I was in my early 20's. I popped it lifting weights. It was just sewn up. Recovery was several weeks- no lifting. Ten years later the familiar feeling was back, same side, this time repaired with mesh. All was fine for about ten more years, then both sides started hurting. This time they were repaired arthroscopiclly with mesh. The recovery was surprisingly fast for this one. Minimal pain. Well, it's been about ten years and that area is a little uncomfortable after running lately, no bulge though. In any case, just get it done, get recovered, get on with life. It isn't really a big deal and it will just get worse.
Let me know if you have any questions.

  • I had a hernia appear many years ago.  I do a lot of work on film sets and made the DUMB mistake of trying to help lift a camera dolly...heard the 'pop' in my groin right away.  Months went by and nothing, no pain.  It began to appear as a small lump just below my waistline.  Doc said I'd be fine w/out surgery, but it was pretty gnarly (especially if you really think about what's causing the bulge).  So I had surgery.  Took forever to heal...since they have to cut thru your core muscles, every single type of movement is affected.  Luckily it was the offseason, so I just hung out in bed for a few months.  Lauging and sneezing become your WORST enemies real quick.

  • Hmm. Three days into recovery from surgery. Interesting,,mmm, yes, interesting. Key hole surgery means your tummy gets pumped full of CO2 so they can see and carry out repair, which in turns means that gas has to go somewhere else afterwards. I still look pregnant. Not a great deal of pain but not comfortable just the same. Moving very slowly at the moment and getting lots of rest.

One point I would make during my overnight stay. Even though I'd made it known to the surgeon and other hospital day staff that I undertake considerable tri-athlon training, I had not considered the dis-connect between this group, and the less experienced, less qualified over night staff. They considered a resting heart rate in the 40's and blood pressure of 100/60 for a 58 year old as being to low and immediately commenced remedial action without explanation. This resulted in an additional 12 hour stay in hospital. The hospital staff admitted as much as I was leaving.

  • Happy Recovery.....
  • Good to hear you got it fixed. Recover and put it behind you. Best of everything to ya.
  • Terry, I had a laparoscopic repair to one on the side, not sure of the term. This was 2 years or so ago right before I started this game, no real pain after and until you posted this thread, had completely forgotten about this...
