Run averages compared to your zones-how realistic? Examples?

Question:

We all have our zones that help us with strategies for IM and HIM. We hope for an avg run pace of EP(Z1) for IM, correct? I know we go slower first 6 miles, etc, but in the end, the goal is an avg pace per mile of EP, correct? And, for HIM an avg pace/mile of MP(Z2), correct? My question is, how many of you really do hit that? If not, what is most typical? Like, Patrick-for your 3:15 IMTX marathon, was your avg pace/mile=to your EP? I'd really like to know if it plays out that way for most?

Examples of IM, HIM or stand-alone results vs. zones?

  • I was just wondering the same thing, hopefully there is some good feedback!
  • My EP in the Data Tool is 7:41; I ran 7:28 average with about 30 steps at every aid station. But my endurance fitness is way better than my 5k fitness (my vDOT is "stronger" when I use a half marathon result vs a 5k result).

    BUT BUT BUT

I did not run with an eye towards a pace or a goal. Instead I ran what I felt I could sustain all day (which I didn't, I faded). I focused on fast aid stations and great form. I managed to eat a lot, especially early. And I ran fookin hard for the last 6. I only looked at my pace / splits after I finished!!!
