Crack Pipe for Disc/WheelCover, How To

 What's the deal?

finally got a crack pipe so that I don't butcher my wheel cover.

took the head off of my pump, slid the pump tubing over the end of the pipe.  But every time I get to high psi's, the tubing blows off of the crack pipe.

What do you guys use to keep the tubing on the end of the pipe?

I was thinking I'd go try to find a spring loaded plumber type clamp at Lowes or Home Depot.

got any other ideas?

  • Huh???? What????

Lock the pipe into the end of the pump. Push crackpipe onto open valve stem. Hold it there while someone else pumps. Stop pumping at appropriate psi. Take crackpipe out of pump and put into flat kit so you can inflate on the course if required.

Note: using CO2 and a crackpipe is a fairly easy one-person operation. There are some leverage requirements, but that can be met by pulling crackpipe up on valve stem while holding the tire against your chest....sounds more complicated than it really is.

  • Dang I make things harder than they have to be..... Doopid, Doopid,....dain bramage doopid...
  • Oh wait, here's why I decided that. I don't think the end of the crack pipe was fitting into the pumps head. gotta look closer at that....be back in a few...
  • Hose clamp to tighten the hose over the crack pipe ferrule.
  • Crack pipe fits the Schroeder side of the pump, won't fit in the presta side
  • excuse me but as a toxicologist this makes no sense... and why the heck would a triathlete be messing around with a crack pipe for?

does this have to do with wheel cover?

Patricai - it is slang for an adapter that is commonly used with disc wheels / wheelcovers.

  • @ Patricia - I've had a wheelbuilder wheel cover for 2 years now. once the cover is on, putting air into the tire can sometimes be a chore. often, the bicycle pump head is large enough to make it crowded in the wheelcover opening. and the lever on the bike pump seems to always 'get in the way'. end result is that, over time, I beat up the wheel cover just do to necessary roughness to get the pump head on and off. This adaptor has a smaller head and fits much easier into the wheelcover opening.
  •  Yes schrader side is the secret.    Put the pipe in the large pump hole.   Tighten pump lever firmly.      Have someone hold the pipe on the valve as you pump.

  • That was the kicker.

pump I had been trying to use it with was only presta.

    problem fixed

    thx Haus.
