FC to HIM plan to IM plan... OUCH!

I have been a part of EN as a member for 4 weeks now, and participated in Fast camp for 8 weeks prior to that. Coach Rich had me start in on the HIM intermediate plan post FC, I have one more week with this plan(week18) before I load up the int IM plan (week 9), then a HIM race in 3 weeks on June 16th, and build to IMC Aug 26th.

I found it a bit tough at first keeping up with the bike volume in the HIM plan, but feel like I have adjusted mentally and physically now. I needed to start preplanning for next month so I peeked ahead to the IM plan I start next week, and saw a 4 hour ride Saturday, and a 3.5 hour ride Sunday. My reaction was 'holy crap'?!?! I'm trying to wrap my head around going from 5 hours on the weekends to 7.5, I don't want to sound like a whiner, but I feel a lot overwhelmed. This is my first season training with EN plans and I'm not even following the plans to a T due to a run injury. I am sort of grateful I am just doing my little 30-45 minute runs at a low intensity every second day right now, I think if I threw in the longer/harder run workouts right now I'd lose it!

Does everyone feel like this? I KNOW the Sunday rides you can take out some of the duration if you're cooked, so be smart, but I can't be the only one feeling like this, I'm normal right?!

  • Becky — my n=1 experience with my 1st IM training was that when I moved from HIM to IM training that the long bike stuff was tough. But after a few weeks I did adjust. For me, at first, I did the Z4 stuff on Saturdays and just tried to get the rest of the volume in without worrying about the intensity. And on Sundays, I held back a bit and tried to sit on an IF of 0.8 (whereas in HIM APB I just used to drill myself).
After about 4 weeks I was doing most of the workouts as prescribed.
Next season I intend to do a BBW after the HIM and before I start my IM build so the weekend bike volume wont be so daunting.
  • Hey Becky, I am in same boat. I just raced HIM on sunday and loaded up IM for IMC this week. What i did when peaked ahead was to add 15min to my sat/sun rides in the HIM plan each weekend the last 2 weekends and did only 1 week taper (too late for you). So my plan for this weekend looking at a 4hr sat 330 sun is to to the 4 sat and 3 sun then add 15min each week for a couple of weeks. Like Rich always says, no need to follow plan into a brick wall.
