EN SoCal Social

TeamEN SoCal Ride + Social -- ALL TeamEN athletes and friends are invited to join Rich for a ride in the San Gabriel Mountains followed by lunch. EN will pay $100 towards the tab!

Details:

Date: Saturday, June 16th

Time: 7am

Where: Encanto Park, Duarte

Schedule and route:

  • Meet at Encanto Park, ready to ride, at 7a
  • I will do a quick ~30' class on group riding skills and descending, then...
  • We'll ride down a bike path to the Sante Fe Dam where we'll practice these group skills and pacelining, then ride back up the path towards Encanto. This riding portion is ~12 miles and will take us about 45'. Then...
  • We'll ride ~7 miles to the base of Glendora Mountain Road, featured in Stage 7 of the Tour of California. GMR is a famous climb and TT route in the SGV. 8.7 miles at 5-6%. Rich will likely TT it, you can too, or not, but the ride is sure to redefine your perspective on "climbing" if you've never done something like this. Really, it's not that bad, just long. Climb is ~45-60', depending on fitness, etc
  • We'll then ride about 20-30' along Glendora Ridge Road, flipping it at some point and returning the same route. We'll see what the concensus is regarding lunch time, etc and will figure out this out and back time. But's a nice road, very little traffic, etc.
  • You'll descend GMR the way you came (the "front side") putting your new decending skills to the test.
  • Ride back to the cars, change and drive 5 miles to...
  • T Phillips in Monrovia for lunch.

RSVP by posting to this thread and let me know if you're in for lunch. I'll update the IN list as we go. Please use this thread to arrange carpool, etc, if you want.

The "IN" List

  • Coach Rich -- Ride + Lunch
  • Dino Sarti -- Ride + Lunch
  • Tim Bixler -- Ride + ?
  • Anson Lam -- Ride + Lunch

  • FWIW, I'd vote for the 16/17 weekend with an AM/lunch time schedule. Since many of us train in the mornings on weekend days, it will be less disruption to the remainder of people's schedules.

Since the 17th is Father's Day this year, I would predict you'll get a better turn out if it is Saturday the 16th.

  • Ok, great!

So is that a vote for a Saturday AM ride followed by lunch?

  • I am down for Saturday the 16th Am ride and Lunch!
  • Ok, great.

    Dino, I'm thinking

    • 7am meet at Encanto
    • Quick ~30' talk on group riding and descending skills, so I can take advantage of a teaching opportunity while I have everyone.
    • Ride: down the path to the Santa Fe dam, then pace lining / group work across the dam and back. Then head out to GMR, climb to top, then across Glendora Ridge Road for about 20-30' before flipping it. Descend front side GMR, ride back to Encanto.
    • Lunch at T Phillips in Monrovia, with 70+ beers on tap
  • Yep.

I'll be playing my typical role of "that big guy off the back on the climbs" in your neck of the woods.  image

  • Cool! I'm in too. image
  • Sounds like a top shelf day! I like it better "than no prisoners" style image

Now we need a few more heads..... Do we need to send engraved invitations?

  • We do need more folks, for sure! If its just the four of us, then I'm in big big trouble image
  • Considering it, will try to let confirm soon. 2hr drive from SD to be wheels rolling at 7a is a little rough, but probably doable.
  •  Wish I could be there - but I'll be up north that weekend. Definitely next time! Have fun!

  • Bummer - I'm back east that weekend.
  • I'm in.  Look forward to meeting everyone.

  • Let me start with my excuses.  Dog ate my homework, sun was in my eyes, had knee surgery 6 weeks ago and haven't riden my bike since October (that one is real)....  Let me check with the boss.  It is our wedding anniversary and see if she has anything planned that morning.  Coming home all "lubed up" after a ride, haven't done that since we were dating over 22 years ago.  Better take her to a really nice place that night.   I need this to boost the mojo.

  • Folks ...

Sorry to report that I'll have to miss Saturday. I decked it on the bike this past weekend, and though I didn't break anything (me or bike), I'm a bit beat up and doubtful that a 3+hr big climbing ride will be a good idea. If for some reason, there is a miraculous improvement I'll update here and be there, but for now I'm out. image
  • Hi Tim,

Sorry to hear about your crash! You're still welcome to join us for lunch if you're up for the drive. Certainly understand if not.

  • No sweat, Tim. GMR only takes 50'..... image

    Get better, man!
  • Everyone standing tall after a TT of Glendora Mt. Road - 8.5 miles of steady 4-5% climbing. I missed my PR by about 20", but had a blast riding with everyone. Super cool to hang out at lunch also...
