Shoulder pain from Cycling Crash

Anyone have experience with shoulder pain from a cycling crash? I went down going up hill at 20MPH; happened 55 miles into a century ride. Was able to finish with mild discomfort/annoyance.

Landed on my hip & shoulder. For the most part just lots of road rash.. not that bad. But my shoulder is sore and slightly swollen. Definitely does not feel as if any broken bones. It aches and has some limited mobility, but NO shooting pains when resistance is applied to my arm in any direction.  Mobility and aches are the worst when taking my arm in across my chest for a stretch.

Happen to anyone else before? Upper body injuries are foreign to me.

  • Hey David, last time i crashed in 2010 and the shoulder took the brunt of it I had a grade 2 separation. U may have a suffered a minor separation too. Mine was easily diagnosed as I had some other borken bones in the hand and was getting xrayed for them so they did many on the shoulder too.

  • I would get an X-ray to rule out any big stuff. But yes, I fell just on a run 2 weeks ago and could not lift my arm to reach into a cabinet or to put the seatbelt on. X-rays negative. Pain subsided in 3 days and I had full motion back.
  • In my experience (just got back from a check up with my doc post shoulder surgery in January), there's just a lot going on in the shoulder joints. Lots of stuff to injure so best to rule out the bone stuff first with an xray. You can usually get those done pretty quickly and easily and if you decide to schedule and MRI, you're shoulder will likely have enough time between now and when you're actually able to get an appointment to rule out...or confirm...something more serious.

  • Thanks for the quick responses. I'll get an x-ray to rule out bone stuff. I don't think I caused too much damage as it's more discomfort than anything. No harm in scheduling an MRI and waiting to see if it heals in the mean time.
