Eagleman 70.3 this weekend.

This will be my first Eagleman.  I read several Race reports, and viewed you tube videos about the course.  Thought I would ask the Haus if there are any insider tips to the weekend that maybe I had missed.  I am staying in a B&B in Easton.  Arriving Friday and leaving Monday.

Any course tips, parking, things to do, or places to eat?  Any and all tips welcome.

Thanks,

Ken

  • last year was my first experience at EagleMan - going back again this year. There isn't much in Cambridge. If you like Italian, i can recommend Scossa in easton www.scossarestaurant.com. I managed to get a parking spot 4-5 blocks blocks away from the transition area last year, the streets filled up pretty quickly. Others i know used the shuttle service without problem.
  • Out of the Fire is pretty good as well in Easton. There is a small parking lot just behind the resto.
  • Hey Ken - welcome to your first Eagleman! This will be my second, although I have ridden the bike course many times.

If you've read race reports, you may have already discovered these things, but I'll just rattle off a few things about the course that you may or may not find helpful. ;-)

The bike course, as you probably know, is very, very flat. It can be windy though... places that seem to typically be the windiest are Egypt Road, and I feel like Dalsville Road on the way back can be as well. Egypt Road is notorious. It is one of those roads that feels a little never-ending, especially if it is windy! The last time I rode the course, I had a tailwind on Egypt Road, but that has NEVER happened to me before! Otherwise, the course is straightforward. According to the forecast, it isn't supposed to be that windy on Sunday. Good thing for the bike, but a little breeze is nice on the run!

The run can be brutal. It is flat, unshaded and HOT. This year will be no exception. There is a stretch between miles 2 and 4, I think, where the aid stations are a little bit more spread out than the rest of the course - it's not much, but on a hot day, it can seem like a lot. Take a look at the course map and you'll be able to see what I mean. There is plenty of ice at aid stations, and it will be your best friend on Sunday!

Darren is right - there isn't much in Cambridge... we are staying at the Hyatt, so we usually just get food there. Easier with the kiddos and stuff to stay put (besides, dragging them away from the pool is not the easiest task!)

As far as parking, I tend to get there early, and are usually able to get a space on the surrounding streets. I think I was able to park right on Somerset Ave a couple of blocks down from the park. I've never used the shuttle service.
