DeSoto 400 Mile Bike Short for racing?

Does anyone have any experience with racing in the desoto 400 mile bike shorts?  Half to full distances.  Got a pair, the pad seems a bit large for running.  I'll take them out for a spin and see how they feel.  Wondering if anyone has any thoughts.  thanks

  • I wore them for the bike portion of the two IM's I have done but switched to tri shorts for the run. I wouldn't run in them.
  • Same experience as Bob. I have worn them on the bike portion of an IM, but changed before the run.
  • FWIW... Have not used the 400 mile cycling shorts, but L-O-V-E the Forza Tri Shorts (w/ 4 pockets). Swim, ride and run in them.
  •  Tri bibs great for full race.     If hot, take off shirt, allow straps to hang at side, put shirt back on.

But next race will probably use 400 mile bibs due to tender butt issues.    Have run six miles in them.    Will probably switch to running shorts.

+1, awesome shorts, and you don't need to take the singlet off to take the straps down.

  •  This is great stuff. Thanks for the replies. Looks like another order to desoto is in the near future. Seems like there is some love for the fora tri short. Any thoughts on that model vs forza riviera?

  • The Riviera is the best tri short ever made. They make a bib version as well. A tri suit version is coming out later this fall. Basically their ITU suit with a front zipper. Similar to their Liftfoil suit but it will come in colors other than black... which is f'n hot.

I can't remember exactly what tri bibs I got (dunno know if there are more than one) but it was their highest end model. Dig it, you won't be disappointed. I refuse to ride in anything other than bibs and they work great for the run also. The shorts have great compression and can also help you look much thinner, which is never a bad thing

  • 2 weeks ago I ordered the forza riveria tri-bibs. They arrived 2 days before my HIM. I pretty much had ruled out trying them for the first time on race day. However, I put them on mostly for sizing and feel sat afternoon. OMG, the amount of compression was stimulating I ended up wearing them most of the day. I put them on at 430 am race day, packed my tri shorts, and thought if they still felt like a million bucks before i put wetsuit on they were gonna stay. The first 200-300m off the bike it did feel a little diaperish, but after a pull here and there, gold for the next 1:50. I have worn them every workout since and totally expect to race next weekend's HIM in them. As for ironman distance, they certainly have more padding then my racing shorts so I will make that decision after 3-4 4hr rides.

  • Forza riviera is a great short, but it's cut very low in the front at the waist (at least the 2010 model, haven't ordered another). When I say low, I mean make sure you've done your manscaping low...

Rich, you probably got the Riviera bibs.  They're more expensive than the tri bibs.

Does the pad look like this?

  •  I have both the standard 400 mile bibs and just bought a pair of the Riviera bibs before my first 70.3 race this year.  I did long rides in the 400 mile bibs last year but didn't like running and swimming in them.  I have done several long rides in the Riviera's as well as the one half and as far as I am concerned these are the only bibs/shorts I will wear for long distance stuff.  I do my normal training in the regular desoto tri shorts but for long races Riviera's are the only way to go IMO.

  • This is helpful in figuring out what to do next.
-@mike-thanks for the insight re the cut. They looked really low in the pics on the desoto site
-@rich- I didn't think my profile pic made me look that heavy...just kidding...I do like bibs more than shorts. 100% of my riding is in bibs...except races
-@robin- tell us more about your thoughts on wanting to change out of the bib
-@tim&@dusty-seeing as you have experience, how does the bib component feel on the run?

The good news is that I can get all black tri bibs...don't want the red to clash with the team jersey...
  •  Tribib good for whole race.

Bib 400 mile.     Pad maybe a bit thick for long run.    So if i use that, will change to running shorts in t2.

  • I have used Sugoi 100% of the time, for cycling and tri shorts/bibs, for the last several years (helps that I also got 50% off online).

Last year, per EN suggestions, I ordered the 400 mile cycle bibs from Desoto to try. OMG...I dumped all my Sugoi stuff, and ordered 3 pairs of 400 mile bibs. It's all I use now.

For tri shorts, same thing. Dropped all Sugoi for the Desoto Forzas. They are cut a little low like Mike mentioned. So much - at least to me - like they feel like they're falling down and I'm constantly pulling them up, altho they're not moving at all. So extra sunscreen on the "racing stripe" on the lower back for sure!

My stomach is too...unreliable...to ever wear bibs during a tri. I'd hate to have to mess with the bibs to get them off if I HAD to hit a honey bucket.
  •  @David,

I have never had a problem with the bibs on the run.  For a half I don't change anything.  For IMFL last year I just pulled the straps down in T2 based on a suggestion from Rich but to be honest I am not sure I really needed to.  I am going to do one or two long runs in them this year to see how they are after mile 18.

  •  quick update

got both the 400 mile bibs and the tri rivieria tri bibs (the ones with the float pad pictured above)

road in the 400 mile bibs, super hot day, very comforable.  my rear was very happy, credit card shortly probably won't be when i buy another pair or two...

rivieria tri bibs are also great, road 50 miles, felt comfortable the whole way, ran 7 miles in them this morning, pad was not bothersome.  i'll have to get used to the extra heat which is trapped by the bib, but it will also provide more places to put ice and keep cool.  easy to slip bib part off of arms while wearing a sleeveless shirt so could do that on the fly as needed.

i'll be wearing the rivieria tri bibs at racine this weekend, after a bike and run in them I feel comfortable for a race.

another happy de soto customer.  now the clothing line is up to wetsuit (bibjohn, full sleeve, sleeveless), bike bibs, and tri bibs...not much else to buy, except more.  yay for discounts

  • Also got both. Have been wearing the forza tri short for a couple of years now and liked it better than most other things i wore. Just also got the riviera bib & 400 mile bib, both are amazing... The only issue i have is that i just also switched to an ISM Adamo saddle, so there is a bit going on there in adjusting, but the bibs were great on my BBW last week!
  •  I have an adamo seat as well.  What issues have you had with the desoto and the seat?

  • Just a quick update here: I was looking for new tri-shorts and it sounds like the Forza Rivieria is a winner. New for 2012, they added an inch+ in height to waist line so it isn't a low-rider. At least that is what descriptions claim. I ordered one so we'll see how it goes.

De Soto added a one-inch higher rise in the waist than the original model that had white legbands
  • I have the standard 400 mile shorts - I did IMLP twice in them, wearing them under my wetsuit in the swim then on the bike, I did switch to regular trishorts for the run.
  • I have the 400 mile shorts and have done IM CA 70.3 in them ...no problems! The pad quickly "disappears" when you start to run. With that said, I am wearing them for IMWI but changing in to running shorts for the marathon.
