Why so much running Weeks 18-19 Ironman plan?

7 Days of running from tomorrow until next Tuesday for a total of 5+ hours of suggested running.  Seems like a lot.  I know we are not supposed to follow the plan into a brick wall but the mere suggestion to a Type A person to run that much before the big dance *seems* dangerous.

Interested in feedback.

  • @Jim, while the Wed is your regular quality run, and Thursday is typical long run (done at easy at z1 or slower), Friday is strides, Sat + Sun are z1-z2 (you should be asleep), Monday is a shortened work session and then you move into the "sharpening" run phase (shorter/faster workouts). This 7 day window represents a running FREQUENCY push, just before we need to dial all things back. The intensity of 2/3 the workouts is z2 or easier....IOW very very easy. Sounds like the problem is the Type A and not the Plan. image If you are worried, just dial it back. You can never be too rested, and every year I personally rest more and do better....so try it out!!

    Love it!

  • Thanks for the inside info.  Makes sense.

  • I personally am resting more this year and feeling better too! Can't do too little next 19 days...and I'm going to test the theory!

  • @P - When you say you rest more every year are you talking about resting more during the Taper?
