TOC Camp bike?

I have a road bike and my P2C.  Which one is recomemended for the Camp?  Add clip-ons to the road bike and use it? The positions are very similar with my road bike at 78 deg and my tribike at 80.

My first race is end of June for Buffalo Springs but my "A" race is IM Lou end of Aug.

thanks, Dusty

  • Dusty,

Everyone had road bikes last year.  I'm bringing my road bike and I'm doing IMLP 8 weeks after the camp.

  • I'm planning on bringing my road bike for ToC because I anticipate riding in a group or at least having more cyclists on the road than usual. The road bike is far more easier to manuever around other riders than a tri bike. I wasn't planning on putting any clip-on aerobars on it either for that same reason.
Now if your tri bike has a powermeter, but your road bike does not...then that's a harder decision.
  • One exception, Dan Socie has to ride his cyclocross bike with knobby tires so we can keep him with the group.

  • road bike for me, for sure
  • Road bike for me too!!!

Dave, are you flying out on Fri or Sat? I'm going to LAX out of BOS on Friday. I get in at 11:15 or so on American, FYI

Looks like I'll see you at Multisports before that anyway.

    Mike
  • Road bike it is!

  • Road bike for me too.  @Kittma--do we really want to know our power? I think not.

I'll be flying in to LAX on Fri.  arriviing at 12:10 on US Airways.

Anyone have experience with a Thule bike case.  This is what my LBS has to rent out.  Seems good like the Trico.

  • All Campers: Please remember to submit pix of your proposed bike and kit to D Socie for mandatory pre tour fashion approvals and screening.

SH*T, I gotta go buy some white bar tape!!!!

Road bike- abso freakin lutely!!!!  The only addition I'm making is I'll be putting this on my front end and hooking it up to The Halligan's bike!!!

Yeah, compared to my ProTour boyfriends, my puny watts up those KOM's will be a sad sight. However, it would be nice to wear that badge of honor of  "I did 10,000 TSS this week".

  • I'm planning on bringing the roadie with me, her name is Natasha ("Tasha"). She's got an Ergomo BB installed already (as well as my tri bike "Kristyn"), so just brining my computer.
I've already got the white bar tape, but I'm sure I'll need some newer so it's sparkling.

I'm sure we'll have plenty of discussions around the naming of my vehicles/modes of transportation during the camp. LOL

    Pre-approved clothing?
Will we be getting the EN kits when we arrive, or will they be shipped prior so we have to bring them?

Will there be a ToC forum group established, so we can post questions, as I will have a lot more than this?!?
  • And post pics so Dan Socie can euro-approve your ride. image

  • awww man....are Dave and I the only ones busting out the tandem??

You guys bring a Tandem and I'm TOTALLY renting one for the week and recruiting a stoker!!!

  • I have a Medium/Small tandem if we can find room for it .

You absolutely want to bring a road bike if you have one. You'll enjoy the riding, and scenery, much more if you're able to see it, and not viewed sideways...just sayin'

  • Rich- do not tease me!!!!
  • hahaha. squeeze in the tandem!! we'll totally ride it one day. image

  • I've got a standard crank on my roadie though, not a compact yet. I'll check into getting a compact on the roadie, shouldn't be too bad ($$$), I hope.
  •  I'm starting to regret swapping out the tripple

  • Nemo, don't sweat it. image remember- 3 hours/week in the basement was all I had leading up to the ToC last year. slap on a 27 cassette and you'll be good.

  • You think I could get away with keeping my standard crank with a 12-27 on the back?

Scott, that's what I used last year.

Scott- you do know the story of "THE HALLIGAN" right?  If The Halligan uses a standard with a 12-27, I'm converting back to a triple!!!

  • @Nemo, I've heard of this mythical, fictitious beast called "The Halligan", yes.

If the myths are true...a quadruple might be in order!!!

I'll still check how much $$$ it takes to get a compact for my roadie, but if it's too much I'll just stick with my standard w/ an 12-27 and emulate (as best as an ordinary mortal can) "The Halligan".
  • It's all hype.   You'll be fine with the 12/27.

Is your groupo the same on both bikes?  Why don't you just switch your compact to the road bike for the week?

  • Yeah, it's all Shimano Dura-Ace on both bikes. Personally, I've never taken off a crank so I'd have to get some help from my LBS folks (where I bought the bike) and I know they'd have to cut/shorten the chain too.

Since I have an Ergomo, I'm always afraid to mess with the crank and bottom bracket combination, as I'm afraid something might get messed up and ruin my PM situation.

I'll inquire this week all the possibilities at my LBS. Plus, since I haven't been up there in a while it's always fun to window shop and drool!
  • I'm no expert wrench....but I can tell you that I also have Dura-Ace and have switched between a standard and a compact crank without shortening the chain....just needed to adjust the front deurailer.
  • You'll definitely need to shorten the chain.  Here is a link to a chain length calculator Just copy the formulas down and put in your own measurements.
