IMCDA racing wheels

I come from the "race the disc unless you're in the real mountains" camp, however, looking at IMCDA bike course video I wanted to throw this out there. Looks like a Canada type course, with sustained, but not steep, climbs and descents. I'm a bigger guy, 6-2 175#, just wondering if I should race disc/808, or 808's front and back. I will also have a 404 front if cross winds are predicted. Thoughts ?

  • Race the most aero setup.

  • WM - In my 9 years racing IM CDA I've never encountered wind which would make me think twice about my decision to use wheel cover on the rear. And, based on reports from buddies who have done this year's course, while it does have some climbing, it is flatter than previous incarnations. You will be faster  with a disc or whel cover.

  • A disc, always and forever.

  • Yep, been there every year since '03, I think, and while I've seen "windy" on occasion I haven't seen "scary windy" like AZ has seen a few times, for example.

Bring the disk / cover, you'll be fine!

  • Check. Thanks guys. See you out there.
  •  Might want to think about the front wheel.    Have riden 2009 and this years course.    I think the potential for wind is greater because of greater exposure on the 95 portion.  There is one particular gap/bridge that seems to have significant wind often.

  • Thanks Robin. I'm taking both 808 and 404 front wheels no matter what. I experienced some white knuckling last year at Canada on descents due to wind gusts. What's your take on bike course for this year ?
  •  I believe the elevation change is about the same in cda as previous.    The new route on highway 95 will be faster with no sharp turns.
