Post HIM Pains

After completing my 1st HIM of the season on Sunday, I am having a couple of issues that I wanted to throw out to see if anyone has any suggestions/advice for me.

First, I am having pain in my left foot.  The pain starts near the bone at the base of my little toe and continues along the outside edge of my foot to the heel.  And then today it expanded to include the outside/back of my ankle (not my achilles).  I have had ankle issues on this foot in the past, but nothing quite like this - nothing involving the foot itself.  It hurts just walking - can't imagine what running will feel like yet.

Second, I have had a side stitch on my right side just below my rib cage that seems to flair up when walking.  This started pretty much right after the race and has continued through today.  I have never had issues with this before and have no idea what it could be.  At first I thought it was dehydration or something, but after 2 days and tons of water, it hasn't gone away.

Thanks!!

  • Hmmm... not sure about the foot thing, but the side stitch is likely due to the ligaments that support your liver. They get stretched when running, especially with labored breathing (when the diaphragm goes up at the same time the liver goes down/gets jostled all around, the ligaments stretch and get pissed - thus the stitch). I have this problem when I do hard intervals or after I've eaten a fatty meal or had alcohol (and my liver is heavier than usual b/c it's busy getting rid of all the toxins). Hopefully it'll go away soon when the ligaments relax if that's the issue - feel better!
  • So perhaps the high levels of post race beer may be a contributor??
  • Haha! Yep, that *could* be it!!! Feeling any better today?
  • About the same. Guess I need some time off.
  • Gregg, MY.02 cents is to go get the foot looked at if its not 100% real soon...little pains can lead to bigger issues down the road...Your FEET are really important for this sport of Tri...just in case you didn't know that... image
I let some weird pain that I didn't understand what it was go on for months in my left foot, turned out to be tendanitice that took a long time to get rid of. Luckily I could still train with it but it took going to a foot doctor and finally a Chiropracter (yep, for the foot) to correctly treat my foot...
  • I had similar symptoms after a marathon and it turned out to be a bone in my foot had gotten out of place. A trip to the sport doctor and then to the chiropractor x 3 visits had it all fixed up. As for the pain in the side - you might of strained a rib or something. Get things checked out stat.
