cycleops joule download issues

I have a new tribike and had to buy a  new power tap wheel and computer as it is a tiny bike-47inc with 650 wheel.  I successfully downloaded my first ride data onto the computer.  I had two trainer rides last week, which I had not downloaded,  and my FTP test today.  I just hooked to the computer to do the download, AND NOTHING IS THERE from these rides!!  Can anybody help me find the data?  Along with the 6/3 ride I had downloaded, there were 3 files from 2009 that I did not see the first time I hooked to the computer.

  • Hi,

Could it be that the 2009 files you see are the two trainer rides and the FTP test? Maybe they are showing up as year 2009 rather than 2012? I suppose this could happen if the year on your joule is set to 2009. Check the date on your unit.
  • x 2 what Enrique said (I set the wrong date when I set up my Joule the first time so the WO in WKO had the wrong date).
Also, are you using Power Agent? There has just been a new version released (June 10).
  • Thanks guys but no, the date is correct. I set date and time before I ever used it. I have my very first ride with this joule from June 3, 2012 recorded. The 2009 data is before that ride and about 1 minute. When I go to the history on the joule itself there is nothing else recorded and I rode 6/3, 6/5, 6/7 and 6/13 (sadly that last my test, the data I'm desperate for!). I haven't done the update on power agent yet.
  • If you open the Joule folder in windows explorer, are there any 2012 files in the activities folder? Do the 2012 rides show up in the "history" portion of your Joule?
  • No. There is nothing in history in the joule except the very first ride 6/3/2012 ride and same for the folder in windows. But I did get data when I rode all the subsequent times
  • I have seen a problem something akin to this...

I had inserted a micro-sd card into the Joule, did some rides where it recorded fine on the card, then on two or three rides (including a FTP test :-( ) it simply didn't store the results. The data wasn't on the computer's internal storage or the micro-sd card. I removed the micro-sd card and reinserted it, and it has been working (cross my fingers) ever since.

I do recommend inserting a micro-sd card as it will expand the data you can keep on the unit. Check the garmin website for the specs on the micro-sd cards that are supported.

  • I didn't realise that the card couldn't be bigger than 2 GB — I had no data after I tried to use a 8 GB card. I ended up taking it out and the Joule started working fine again.
  • Thanks Alan and Peter. I think you guys may have nailed the problem but not before I returned it to Wheelbuiler (without the 16GBmicro-sd). I called Wheelbuilder customer service as I got the joule from them. I explained the problem and they said they would get back to me. The reply email said, 'we disicussed this in the haus and think it best you send it back and we will send out another one' (all at my postage expense.) and that's what I did. Meantime, I called Saris as I actually have another joule(and seprate wheel) for my 700c road bike (my 20 yo daughter who is on the ASU tri club team shares both bikes with me). And, i had put in the 16GB micro SD card in it too and was not getting any data to record there either. That's when I found out about the issue-yes you can only use a 2GB microdisc, no HD or SD. Gee, ya think they could explain that in the owners manual where I read about extending the memory?! So, I called Wheelbuilder to let them know the issue, and that the joule i sent back was probably fine now that the microSD card was out-news to them too.

So, I have another question. The first joule which I said I have for the road bike, has a full memory, that's why I bought the microdiscs in the first place. Saris said its easy to delete the recorded rides on the joules memory but I am not finding a way to do it. I cannot do it directly on the joule and I can't find the 'so-called' sweeper icon on power agent that is supposed to do the delete. I haven't gotten around to getting the correct micro disc yet. Any suggestions?
  • Betsy — I use Training Peaks Device Agent and Win7 Explorer to download and delete the ride files. In Explorer when the Joule is connected with a usb, it is identified as Cycloops Joule (or something like that. Inside the Joule are three folders. You want the one named 'activities' — once I have downloaded the current file, I use explorer to delete that file.

    I hope this makes sense?
  • It makes sense and I find the history file you talk about. However, I am using a MAC and a converter program called VMfusion. What do you think the equivalent to explorer is? Nothing really happened when I tried to delete the history file. May be a question for my 'Mac guy' who set this up for me
  • Sorry Betsy, but not a Mac guy ;(
  • Betsy: Does PowerAgent for the Mac not have a "Tools" menu that includes the option "Clear Device?" I have since moved away from the Joule and to Garmin because 1) I've been dissatisfied with the pace and of bug fixes and revision releases (and there are so many minor annoyances that they SHOULD be able to fix rather expediently), and 2) Garmin 500 and 800 now support TSS and NP display.
  • At Peter, understand. Macs are great until you run into programs like this only written for PC.
At Steve, I just got off the phone with Saris who educated me that I am not even in power agent! I have training peaks device agent, a third party program which may be the source of many of my problems. Apparently there have been two software updates I haven't taken advantage of. I will download power agent for MAC tonite and hopefully all will be solved. If not, I will consider garmin, but hate to with the investment I've already made.

    Thanks all for your ideas!
  • Betsy - Many of us have been using poweragent in Mac environment without difficulty. having used both Windows and Mac versions, the Mac one (of course) is not only easier on the eyes, but a slight bit easier to use.

The only hassle comes if you want to use WKO+ software to track some of your performance data. Then you have to go thru a process to get your Mac file into your Windows environment (VM fusion). That's doable, but you need to know the steps.
