Clif Shot Blox at every aid station

I've been experimenting with the Clif Blox the last couple of weeks on the bike.  At Eagleman I took 3 in the last hour of the bike with water (after using Infinit for the first couple hours).   On the run, I just couldn't stand the idea of chewing 3 blox, so I took 1 at every aid station (about every 10 min. or so) with water.  I didn't seem to have any tummy distress, which was great.  Is that an okay thing to do?  Previously, I would take a GU every 45 minutes, but always ended up with GI issues later in the run.  If this works out okay, I'm thinking of doing this in IMNY/NJ.  What 'cha think?  THANKS

  • That should work. The idea is to get down x cals per hour, and if spacing them out through the aid stations works that great. One of the issues with gels for people is that they take down a gel and then just a little water. This causes their stomachs to have problems. The solution you have come up with works. Just make sure that you take in enough water with the blok.

  • How many calories are in one of these? Are they pure sugar or do they put other things in them too? Seems like you want to eat the whole bag in one sitting, but maybe that's not a good idea image

Bloxs are like tiny, concentrated gels. Be sure you are drinking enough water to dilute them just like you would a gel.

  • Tom, 1 serving (3 blox) is 100 calories, 70 mg. sodium, 20 mg potassium, 24 carbs, 12 gr sugar. 95% organic ingredients. Gut Gu is also 100 calories, 55 mg sodium, 45 mg potasisium, 25 gr carbs, 5 gr sugar. BUT the GU has maltodextrin and fructose which I heard on a Ben Greenfield podcast is harder on digestion then other stuff (e.g., sucrose). So... instead of taking a GU every 45 minutes on the run, I was planning on taking 3 blox (1 serving) but just had a tough time chewing 3 of those things and making sure I got enough water. I thought by taking 1 blox at every mile with water I'd be getting the same amount of calories, etc. Actually maybe more. I guess calories are calories!
  • I do the blocks on the run....in training it's one every mile for me, but on race day it's one every 2 miles. But then again I am drinking 4oz of perform at each aid station and having multiple gels as well...I think your plan is good but you should count on perform too...I'd have it in your fuelbelt and plan on 1 block per mile with a big swig of perform (if not two)....that will prepare you right!
