Wildflower 2013

I will be in  LA  in april-may and i am interested in doing Wildflower...I mentioned it to my training partner and he said he didnt want to do it because the admin stuff was very  "involved".

We are flying in from Michigan...so before i pull the trigger on flight tickets and registration...can someone fill me in on what  i can expect for that event?

Thanks

  • Robert,

Logistics are tough but it's an awesome weekend and I / EN can help:

    • The race is at Lake San Antonio, CA. Look up Paso Robles, CA and it's about 45' northwest of there. Middle of nowhere, in other words.
    • Highly recommend you camp at the race to get the whole WF experience. Think Woodstock or spring break for middle aged peeps
    • This year Trent (from Indiana) flew into San Jose. He did Tri bike transport to get his bike to the race, rented a car and drove to the race.
    • I'll be up there either with the trailer I currently have (sleeps 4 easily) I would rent a bigger one with more sleeping space. I also have / can rent tents, sleeping bags, etc.

Alternatively you could stay in Paso Robles, but hotels fill up very quickly, I think and you're looking at 45' drive on windy roads to get to/from the race and I'm not exactly sure how race morning works in terms of parking, lines to get in, etc. But at a minimum you'd want to hang out with us at the campground Friday night before the race and Saturday afternoon/evening afterwards. You can use my trailer for showers.

  • It's a life list triathlon event. If you're just interested in a hassle free race - fuggedaboutit. Staying there for two nights in a tent or trailer, sitting about a BBQ pit with scores of other addled triathletes, watching the local college kids run by nekkid, and generally acting like a kid at co-ed scout camp - that's what the event is about. There are maybe 5-6000 racers there, but the event, while running smooth as butter, has a laid back, easy-going feel more associated with a local race of 1-200 participants, rather than the corporate WTC monstrosity it might be.

Two other things: the scenery and race course are nothing like MIchigan in early May, and asuming you stay with Rich and crew, you can quickly make a gang of EN associated friends.

  • If you're LA you can rent a car and drive up. 250 miles from Monrovia to the campground, about 275 from downtown LA. About 3.5-4hrs, easy drive.

  •  I'm in like flynn for WF 2013, what else do you need to know??

For real though, the others have done a good job explaining the basics, but it is a fantastic (and very challenging) race. I'll hopefully have a contingent of my former compatriots from the midwest coming in for the race this year. Already looking forward to it.

  • My intent is to make Wildflower a destination race for EN athletes, similar to what AmZof has become...then stay in LA, shack up at my place, and do the Tour of California with me the next week

  • FYI, I'm in for WF too. Being in NorCal makes this a no brainer.
  • WF looks like a riot....hippies & triathletes! Excellent!

Im defininitly gonna try to make it happen!! Question is...how do i convince my wife to leave Malibu beach for a campground in middle of nowwhere??
I feel some heated negotiations coming my way. ...and major concessions on my part(im gonna lose my ass).

  • I def want in next year, esp after bailing this year. Some of my local tri peeps want to join too!!

If it's you, your wife and friend, you could rent an RV, either in LA or Paso Robles, and use that to camp. That would probably help smooth things over a bit

  • I already registered for 2013. 2012 was a ridiculous good time. This race is "a happening" in the truest sense of the word. If you make it happen, pull the trigger.
  • Goin back to Cali!

We are good to go!  My wife is even interested in doing the oly!     One condition...no cooking.  Please tell me there a restaurant close by.
