run testing

Hi, I am brand new to EN and I have my testing week coming up. I was told that is was ok to do a 5 mile race instead of a 5k for my testing, but the race is on a hilly course. I just read the testing should be done on a flat course. Thoughts? Thanks!

  • Race is pretty much always better than solo TT. Can't be too hilly in FL, can it? I'd go for it in the race.
  • Actually I think you mean a 3.1 mile race or 5km. I am from Canada but isn't 5 miles actually 8km's. I guess you could just use the first 1.5kms as warm-up, then do 5kms in the middle as a test, and then use the last 1.5kms as a cooldown.
  • No it's a 5 mile race in Central Park/NYC that I signed up for before I signed on to EN. And I know it's hilly! Think I may use the middle 5k for HR testing especially as its sure to be packed with lots of runners. Thanks for the input!
  • I prefer to race to get my VDOT paces. Just use the whole race and enter it into the data tool and it'll give you your VDOT # and thus your training paces! Good luck.

  • Yes, you can do a 5 mile race to get a Vdot. Do not just try to go hard for 3.1mi of the 5 mi race, that's a waste of a good race opportunity. I do a 5 miler as a Vdot test annually on January 1. The calculators can account for a race of most any distance.

Yes, Central Park has a couple of good hills. The worst thing that can happen is your Vdot ends up a little lower than your maximum possible Vdot. You'll still get good training effect, and leave room for improvement. Don't overthink this. Just go, race hard, and have fun.
