Is there downside to a week on my road bikde in the middle of tri season?

I'm heading on vacation the week of July 4th to Vail. It's a family vacation but I'll be able to do lots of rides. Since I'm in the middle of tri season the logical move would be to bring my tri bike (which I've been riding since the OS started in January). That said, with all the climbing etc, etc, I could EASILY talk myself into a week of fun with my road bike. Let's face it, it is more fun! The only arguments against the road bike are:

1. The different position means that I'll be working the various muscles differently. Will I "lose fitness" on my tri bike as a result? Will I add to my bike fitness in a way that's transferrable to my tri bike?

2. I'm paranoid that I'll get an injury transitioning to the different position, and hurt my tri season as a result. This is probably pure paranoia but does anyone see this is a legitimate risk or have experience in this regard?

Thoughts?

Many thanks,

Matt

  • I'd take either but road might be more fun in Vail. I had Todd Kenyon set my road bike up as close to tri bike as possible so not a big issue to me. Are you fairly close on the two bikes?
  • No injury worries, definitely no fitness worries. Take the roadie, and go have fun!
  • Places like vail are the reason I have a roadie in the first place! Definitely the roadie.

BTW - are you visiting the in-laws in S Ontario again this summer? Let's get a ride in this time!
  • Take the road bike! I switch up all the time. Jordan Rapp does half his IM training on a road bike...that should be agood endorsement.
  • Matt - don't overthink it. just ride.

BTW, I'm 50/50 on road and tri all year long.
  • I come from roadie background and I ride it every chance I get. I don't mind the TT bike but the road bike is just more fun especially on the hills. Take the road bike and enjoy. If you are used to the TT already you won't suffer going to the road bike but you will enjoy the riding a lot more! Plus if you hook up with a group ride you will be welcome with a road bike but not so much with a TT bike. Have a great vacation.
  • Thanks for all the quick input everyone. Looks like the roadie for sure at this point. Hey, if Rapp does it...

@ Dave, no plans at the moment...my mother in law is actually here all this week upcoming and also coming with us on vacation in Michigan in August. But I'll be back eventually, and yes we'll make sure not to miss again.

    Cheers

    Matt

  • I'm in the same boat. I have a vacation next week to San Diego, and a 1/2 IM 3 weeks after that. I'm brining my road bike so I can ride the hills easier and I think its easier to ride a road bike in somewhat unfamiliar/car congested area's.
  • Definately the road bike! I am 10 weeks out from IM canada and haven't even touch the tri bike. Although it's coming out this weekend. I spent a week in Aspen last fall and used my tri-bike and still had a killer time. Rides like that...doesn't matter what kind of wheels you're on.
  • What all the others say. If you're in Vail, you don't want the TT bike unless your training rides consist of riding from East Vail to West Vail and back. You'll want the road bike for Vail Pass if nothing else. As long as your'e riding, you're good.
  • I'm going to be doing my weekly sufferfest of a ride with Coach Rich tonight, and I'm probably going to switch to riding my road bike this time. I've been riding with my tri bike the whole time, but I think the style of riding (lots of hammering) and the fact that I don't get to spend much time in my aerobars anyway makes it more conducive to riding a roadie. I'm 5 weeks out from my IM btw, but I think I get plenty of time riding my tri bike on the weekends.

    1. Ride the road bike
    2. Put a target on someone's back and turn yourself inside out to beat them. Recommend you pick Brian. Dude just won't shut up and in general just annoys me. He deserves to be crushed on a regular basis, out of general principle

Rich and I have lately been getting a kick out of smokin' all of you young guys. You gotsta learn how to corner and descend!
