Rudy Helmets

Does anyone own or have any input on the types of Rudy helmets that are available? I'm not looking for one of the "aero" styles, just the normal road/training ones. I need one for training and for doing group rides. My old Giro cracked almost in half during my crash on Memorial Day weekend. I have been using my mountain bike helmet in the meantime but that's not a long-term option.

THANKS!

Kori

  • I know some people who use the Sterling and like it. And apparently the Windmax is supposed to be very good (I think it is a new model).

That said, honestly I wouldn't buy a helmet I couldn't try on first. I just think it's hard to buy that sort of thing based on "specs". If you want a Rudy Project lid I'd suggest going to the expo at your next race and trying them (they often have a booth). Otherwise you may be better off heading to the local shop and trying some on. When I bought my last helmet I went to 3 stores because of course each store only reps one or two brands. Annoying but I was happy with the Bell Volt that I ended up with.

Incidentally, I do have a Rudy Project Wingspan for my aero helmet, and for that I tried on someone else's first to make sure I liked it and it first.

    Cheers,
    Matt
  • I have the windmax but tried it on before I bought it. It is super light and my head stays really cool in it. My only "complaint" is that there is a mesh in the liner that prevents putting your sunglasses up in the helmet. I really like the adjustability on the helmet if I add a hat or headband underneath.
  • @Kori - I have a Sterling and I really like it.

@Brett - I am pretty sure the mesh is removable. It is like the mesh on the Sterling and is a 'bug stop'.
  • I've got a Sterling and a Kontact. I have not tried the new Windmax yet. The Sterling feels like it covers more of my head than the Kontact does, but they're both pretty light; I like the Sterling a lot.

I couldn't find anything that says that EN members get a discount on Rudy Project helmets, but I've got a discount code for them if you need it (or anything else Rudy).
  • I wear the Wingspan Aero helmet and it fits me perfectly. I bought the Sterling Road helmet and it also fits great. It has a mesh "bug shield" liner which I don't love because I think it reduces airflow so I'm thinking of cutting the mesh out. But all-in-all very happy with their helmets. They also have a great return policy if it doesn't fit, you simply send it back.
  • @ John - just last weekend I wished I'd had a bug net in my helmet. A bumblebee got in while I was cruising about 24 mph on a flat...... could feel him buzzin..... mashed the breaks and left rubber on the road... couldn't get the buckle undone fast enough and got stung! Little basterd! I was pissed for the rest of the ride. Felt like someone but a cigarette out on my scalp! Never want that to happen again.......
  • Wow Steve! Good point.

Now that I think about it though, I bet he was more upset than you afterwards.
