CD0.1 Special Issue

For those of you who own a vintage (2009-2010) QR CD0.1, you know it has some querks, like getting the rear brake to stop the bike, or fitting a wider rim on the front fork (without hitting the brake caliper).  I think I have hit every issue (or at least many of them) on the bike and have successfully resolved many including the rear brake issue (I retrofitted my 2009 bike witht the 2011 brake).  I am currently grappling with the front tire issue--hence this post.  Has anyone been able to mount one of the newer generation 23mm wide race wheels on the front fork of a CD0.1?  I ask because right now there is almost zero clearance between my tire and brake caliper with my training wheels (which are narrower than 23mm).  If I put on a 23mm wide race wheel, I will have to spread the brake pads to accomodate the wider wheel which would appear to bring the calipers in contact with my tire.  Permant brakes--NOT what I wanted in a race wheel.  For those of you who do not own a vintage CD0.1, the brakes are a TRP center pull with the calipers barely clearing the tire to preven dirty air from circulating.  The design seems to favor a 21mm (or less) rim width, and it has been with some difficulty that I can even run a 23mm TIRE (and a narrower rim/wheel) on the front.  So, has anyone been able to mount up a 23mm rim successfully on a vintage CD0.1, or do you have some suggestion for making this work?  Or should I just junk it and buy a Cervelo?

  • I got one of them thar CD0.1s ... vintage. It's my hill course bike with compact crank so I'll be racing it at Vegas this year. Haven't had any problems with a 23mm tire although this year I've been using a 22/23mm front/rear combo for racing. But I'm using ENVE and HED wheels...haven't bought into the next gen wide wheel theory. In fact I chose ENVE over Firecrest partly for that reason. BTW...brakes working great, but I did have my rear rebuilt, not because it was bad, but because I crudded it up with sweat and corrosion.

A P5 would be nice, but I can't justify getting another bike.
  • I'm running 23mm tires (Continental GP4000s), and they barely clear the brake calipers on the front with my training wheels. I would like to run one of the new 23mm HED Jet 9 rims, but I am afraid that it won't fit the front. Most of the race wheels sold today are narrower than 23mm including zipps 808 (about 19mm wide) and H3 (19mm wide). These would probably work just fine on my CD0.1, but if I'm going to pay the bucks for a race wheel, I have to feel like it's worth it and then some. If I go with a narrower wheel, I have to stock two different tire widths, maybe two different tubes, and the test data shows that a 23mm tire is tough to beat for low rolling resistance. I guess I should take the bike to a shop that sells HED wheels and see if the HED 9 wheel fits. The trouble is I live in a cycling dessert and know of only one shop within a two hour radius that would be likely to have a HED 9 wheel in stock. Thoughts?
