Tri shoe recommendation for running?

Since I started running 3 years ago I have run in the Asics GT-21xx line of shoes. I think they are great and they will continue to be my go-to trainer and racing shoe for long distances.

Starting last fall I wanted to set some PBs in running races so I bought a pair of Addidas adiZero Adios shoes. I ran in them for some road races up to 15k and they worked very well and I set some PBs.

The problem with those shoes is that they are really "running only"...the laces are arranged very densely and it takes a while to get them on. I think if I put elastic laces in them they would not work all that well.

So the question is: what triathlon-specific shoe? Honestly I'm less concerned with what shoes people "like" and more interested in what shoes will be closest to the adiZero Adios in terms of support, design, etc. -- since I've really had a good experience with those.

Any ideas are most appreciated.

  • Of course I can provide some Zoot suggestions if you are interested....

The AdiZero Adios is a 7.8 oz neutral shoe with a 9mm heel to toe drop (24/15).

In the Zoot line the race 3 would be a pretty similar shoe as it is neutral as well, 19/9 mm for a 10mm heel to toe drop. The offical weight is 8.9oz but my men's 9s are 8.4 oz on my scale.

If you want more support, the TT5 is the next step up and if you want more of a race flat the speed2 and Kiawe are both lighter and lower... all are neutral. Kiawe is a light more "minimalist" as it is a 6mm drop where as all the other zoot tri shoes at 10mm (run line is 12mm).

FWIW, I'm doing the vast majority of my training in race 4s now and I'm currently racing in Kiawes.

I'm glad to discuss more details of any of the shoes as I run in all of them. PM me for a discount code if you want to try any of them.

Of course with the Kswiss EN promo right now something like the blade light might be of interest to you as well.
  •  I love the Nike Zoom Elite...Last year for IM Lou I was ready to run in  Saucony FASTTWITCH racers but in the last month switched my thinking to more cushy but still light Nike LunarGlides....Glad I did.

This year I plan on running in my favorite shoe which Nike brought back, new and imporved, the ZOOM ELITE....light enough to be a distance racer but cushy smooth ride...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these shoes.

  • I've been racing in the Pearl iZumi iso transition. 10mm/19mm for 9mm drop -- very light, but surprisingling cushoined. Seamless upper. It also has a heel loop and comes with an elastic lace system for fast transitions.
  • I've progressed from the KSwiss Konami to the Blade to the Quicky Blade. If the shoe doesn't have drain holes on the bottom I consider it an inferior product.
  • Well I took some time this afternoon to go on a tour of the various shoe and multisports stores in Chicago and try on different shoes. I tried some Zoots, some Pearl Izumis, and a bunch of different KSwiss. The ones that felt the most like my Addidas were the KSwiss K-Ruuz 1.5. I'm not sure of the exact specifications but they felt good so I bought a pair. I don't think I'd run more than 10k in them, but that's not the mission! We'll see how they pan out...I'll come back with a full report.

  •  + 1 on the KSwiss Bladelights too..

  • I used the the new shoes K-Swiss R-Ruuz 1.5s in my race yesterday. They are great. I had my fastest triathlon 10k run split ever, taking 36 seconds off my PB run on the same course last year. Incredibly light and helped me keep my cadence nice and high. But not super "minimal", i.e. they had some support for sure. My feet did get some blisters using them but I think that's more a factor of using them without socks (I have never gone sockless before) and using them for the first time ever (clearly not a recommended race-day move!). My legs feel perfectly fine today so clearly I didn't active a whole bunch of muscles in different-than-normal ways. I'm pretty confident I could use these shoes for longer distances too...I'm tempted to try doing the half marathon at Racine in them...
