Training Mojo for the Home Stretch to Race Day

I don't wanna do the calendar count, but I think we're about 4.5 months away.

That's puts us in that 20week plan window.

I'm betting that most of us are in other plans at this time and then Rich n Patrick have us dropping into the IM plan about 12 weeks out, right?  I guess that's around the beginning of August, I think.

So, a couple of questions to get this rolling...

Where are you now, as far as the season layout goes?  And how's the year gone so far for ya?

Have you hacked or modified, or going to hack or modify, any of the buildup to IMFL from here on?

Injuries?  rehab?

Presently, I'm starting 8 weeks of the GetFaster plan.  coming off of a 2 week transition for a recent HIM.  Pretty pleased with that race.  most significantly was a solid even split run that is very unusual for me, a first, actually.  That's the only race I've done this year.  I'm one of those guys that races about 2x year, can't handle the admin/logistics/stress of the 2 weeks leading into a race, makes me pee myself.  So, my next gig is a really big Gap ride in September, and IMFL is the only other tri that I got on the schedule.

Things that I'm gonna do a little different during these months coming up -  Swim, often.  I usually get in 1-2 swims a week but I'm making 4x a priority, really working on the pull.   Bike, as is laid out in the plans, hammer, hammer, hammer, for right now at least!  Group rides and solo stuff.    Run, I'm going to spend most of June/July working on my form more than anything else.  In particular, driving my knees forward.  Thus, lots of sweating with drills, lots of pause/reset, and keeping the EN intervals shorter so that form holds.   Nutrition plan, eat a few less calories and burn a few more.  Goal weight will be 160, sitting at 165 now.  That would be the lightest I've ever been and I think it would help my run a ton.  No injuries to report, tho I do use compression on the calves during training so I don't blow my calf out again.

Work's been busy,  fam's been busy, but mojo is good right now.  Sheri's on board to volunteer.  Kid's seem to get what the  'Face the Line' call means, and why 11 is a number written on the bathroom mirror.

I expect that most of the energy in da' House starts to wane a bit after Hawaii.   I've heard from others that racing this late can be tough when your buddies are packing it in.  So, if I start whining about being tired and just wanting to sleep, slap me around a bit, will ya?

Hope you guys and gals are having a great year!

  • I'm replying to Me....lame and vain!

Most recent 'hack', supposed to be on the Get Faster Plan. Have gone Rich instead, very hard hammer sessions, very hard (for me) mile repeats for the run, swimming is mostly drills and pyramids and mostly for recovery.

It's been fun this way. Don't feel burned out, at this point anyhow. Have watched my FTP creep up higher and this is unexpected this late in the season. Vdot has improved but not sure where it is exactly. May actually do a 5k race soon to get an accurate number. I don't do Vdot tests, often, errr....ever. Just wish there'd be a local 5k on a flattish route around here.

3 months, time to narrow the focus. Picking up the IM plan starting on next Monday.

Lots of IMFL and Beach2Battleship players in my area. This is a good thing. I won't feel like the only triathlete left when others have packed it up for the season.

    Y'all be safe.
  • Time to ramp it up...I did IMLP in 2011 and doing IMFL kind of feels like showing up late for work or something...

After Lake Placid I had some weird foot pain that took a long time to figure out that it was tendanitice. I now stretch, foam roll, self Grastin very regularly to keep this at bay. It helps to now know what it feels like when things start to tighten up. I also wear a boot on a rotating basis from one foot to the other depending upon which foot feels tighter...

Coming Off a BBW last week. Did 15 hours and 260 some odd miles in one week. this was a PR for me.
Showing up Monday for 12 weeks of IM training feeling Fit, strong, and healthy. Focused on big weeks but repeatable weeks as well. Don't want to burn out with 6 weeks to go. Planning on at least one major Big Tri Week around the 2nd RR...
