To race or NOT to race??

Looking for a second opinion about whether or not to race IMMT 70.3 this Sunday.  Been fighting off fever and chills since Tuesday, can't seem to shake it. Focus has been primarily on rest and hydration over the last 4 days. Zero training.  Met with Nurse Practitioner today said urine sample was fine, sent me for blood work. Said unless by some miracle I have zero fever for the rest of the day today and all day tomorrow I shouldn't race    The BIG concern for me is IMLP is 4 weeks away.  It will be my first IM.  I do not want to dig myself a hole which I cannot get out of . Unless of course I am just being paranoid and I should be fine regardless?  First time for me coming down with any type of illness leading into a race.  I have no experience with this whatsoever.  Any insight you might have Team would be most welcome.  Thanks!

  • I would say NO....I remember Rich saying at some point that no one is going to be standing at the start line of Ironman asking if you have completed a 70.3 or not before beginning image

Get better. Get some more long training in. That should be your goal right now. With the half, you'd need to take a good amount of time off to recover properly-When you can be getting in your last long runs/long rides, then taper. Just my $.02 image

    Good luck!
  • Bag the 70.3. Rest and recover for Placid. Its a definite no-brainer.
  • x3 - Make the hard call and Do Not Race. Based on what you've said, your "upside" potential is extremely limited, while the downside risk is HUGE!
  • I would think a HIM 4 weeks before is too close anyway. Plan this weekend calls for 2 long rides, not hard & fast for only 3 hours. I say rest up and try to get those long rides in early next week. RR#2 next wkd and you don't want to miss that
  • ez call: do NOT race! get some rest so the 70.3 does not interfere w/ your 140.6!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No race!!!  Rest, get well.

  • Thanks Team. I've made the call. Packed my pom poms and will be there to cheer on my hubby and our Teammates in Tremblant image Thanks for all your advice.
  • Good move Natalie-Cant wait to see ya in LP!!!
