Garmin 500 and Power Tap update

I finally got around to updating my older PT hub to be ANT+ compatible.  I've paired it with a new Garmin 500 and have done the calibration.  It seems like my watts are reading quite a bit lower than they were on the older yellow PT head unit.  This is at comparable PE.

Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks!

Steve

  • Have you calibrated the PT with the edge 500?
  • I was hoping to do it this week - just been so damn busy.
  • Woody, it's not a big deal, you just to to a menu item on the Edge 500 and hit Calibrate power. Then behind the scenes the 500 sends a calibrate signal to the PT. Don't move the wheel or cranks, just let the bike sit. The PT will respond with number (serial number?) and it's done, all calibrated.

  • calibration w/ PT is done - I may have been using incorrect lingo. As I understand it, Garmin has added additional fields to the data fields (TSS? IF?). Not sure what the new fields are nor am I sure how to update the computer head.

    Sorry for the confusion
  •  Yeah I calibrated it.... even did it again mid-ride when the numbers were feeling off.  I'm going to take the old PT head unit with me on my next ride and see if they match.

Woody, did you figure this out? I just got a new 500 and updated the firmware to have the 500 display Normalized Power, IF, etc. The process was ok, after a little help from Google to figure out what a message meant that I was getting from my browser. Lemme know.

  • Rich - yes, figured it out with help from Garmin tech support (which, by the way, were simply fabulous and incredibly customer-service oriented and friendly!). They helped walk me thru the process, using the Garmin website and USB > computer head cable - downloading the most recent version of software. As I recall, there were approx. 5 new fields that were not in the original version. And yes - red IS the fastest color!
