Vacation surfs up with a BRW

I need a break and got me a place at the Jersey Shore for a week. Looking to learn how to surf. So the bike will go to bed for a week and the swim will be a different flavor of fun. I still want to run so thought to do a BIG RUN WEEK . So what does that look like ? Saw in the Wiki BBW, BTW  no BRW.

  • Hey David, sounds great...I don't have much to add regarding the BRW...I would say just run as much as you like and feel every day!...What I would really like to know is if you take lessons for the surfing...who you used and would you recommend them for another 50+ Age Grouper...I'm interested too! Cowabunga!
  • Hi David — this sounds like a very good idea — a complete change from your normal stuff with a big emphasis on fun.
In terms of a run-only week, you need to keep in mind that out of sbr, the run is the most dangerous in injury terms.
When I do a run only week (or so) I do TP (Z4) intervals every second day. Each session looks something like this: usual warmup with 3 x 20 secs strides, then 1 mile Z4 interval, then walk for 2 minutes, then another Z4 interval, then easy cool down. Short and sharp image
On the alternate days, I just do 20 mins @ Z1 and finish with 5 x 20 secs strides.
For me this works as it has low volume, with running every day and plenty of intensity, but not a stupid amount.
    YMMV.
    Cheers
    Peter
  • @ Joe , will do looking for lessons from a surf shop down there and of course a board rental. I already have a Tri wet suit might as well get some more use out of it . I'll be in touch.

@ Peter , good advice Peter, low intensity short and sweet.. Thx Mate !!
  • HA! now, considering your Dixie Cup post, that's the kind of change up we're talking about!
  • WAIT...WHAT?...big run week? just surf, surf, swim in the ocean, and keep trying to surf. That'll wear you out plenty. I say, and I'm no coach or wsm, screw the schedule stuff and go have fun to recharge. Come back and get to work.
  • @David - have a great time learning to surf.
You may want to check out Aloha Grove http://www.alohagrove.com/ for rentals and/or lessons. I don't have any experience with their lessons but I board through them a few years ago.

Second, I would be nervous to use a triathlon wetsuit while surfing. The board wax creates a lot of friction and I think you'll end up ruining your tri-suit and the smooth but delicate outer skin of the suit.
  • @ Brett, Thx for the heads up on the wet suit vs board wax. Man I'd of messed up my wet suit big time and would have kicked myself in the butt for that. You spot Aloha is awesome. I'm going to Ocean City NJ and found

@ Chris, sometimes I just can't sit still , ha ha...
