Helmet & Glove suggestion

Hey all - time for a new road helmet and might even get buts and get an aero helmet as well.  Also, looking for any suggestions on some new gloves.  I suspect 1+ season is about all I can hope for from them.  I bought there last year from our local shop - working fairly well and the price was reasonable...

Back to the helmets.  I have a Giro Monza - about 6 years old now.  Never had a problem but it seems "big" -- as in not sleek.  I had a big melon to begin with and this helmet exacerbates that

I believe we get discounts from Todd on Lazer helmets so was thinking of going that route for road and TT helmet.  Anyone using a Lazer road helmet?  Seems like there are only 2 options - O2 and Helium?!?

Thanks in Advance!

  • I have 3 Giro helmets over the past 6-7 years and really like them. Although, I have not tried any others image

Their higher end road helmets have the lower profile you are looking for.
  • I have only ever used Giro helmets, because few others fit my fat head! Ex, a few years ago I received a free Rudy project wingspan (??) TT helmet, and their large wouldn't even cover a yamaka-size spot on my melon!

And the only gloves I've used in the last few years are the Spenco "Ironman" gloves.

  • I use a Bell Volt for my road helmet and love it. And I race in the Rudy Project Wingspan. But really this is a fit and aesthetic-driven decision, so YMMV is an understatement. As for gloves, I never wear them on a tri bike. And since 90% of my riding is on a tri bike, my gloves are from the clearance bin at a local cycle shop. For cold-weather riding I use Gore "windstopper" long-fingered gloves...they cost a fortune but are awesome and have lasted 2 years so far.
  • I wear a Giro helmet because it is cool looking and they have a nice choice of colors. I am confident, that like all the other helmets, it will also protect my noggin when the time comes.

    YMMV??

    Your mileage may vary.

  • Thanks for the gloves. I have a pair of those, really like them, and will order more when I go home and confirm the size.

Patrick and I both bought Lazer aero helmets last year. I got the red white and blue Captain America-ish one because it goes well with the EN kit . Really like the hole in the top, great for dumping water on your head.

  • Thanks guys...
  • I am looking at getting an aero helmet for next season. I have looked at the Lazer, but I'm concerned about my head overheating at IMLP next year (potentially 80+ temps). I also need to think about the functionality over commuting and regular road rides. Do most people have a run-of-the-mill $40 helmet for all rides except races where they use the aero helmet?
  • I wore an aero helmet at IMTX and it wasn't an issue. I wouldn't worry about Lake Placid. Most of the newer aero helmets vent pretty well. I have two - LG Vorttice and Rudy Wingspan. I think the Rudy vents better than the LG if we're keeping score.

I use a Rudy Sterling road helmet for training. You can always find a 50-60% discount codes for Rudy helmets.
