Potential Gall Bladder issues...

Hi,

On June 22 I developed what I thought was a weird stitch on my right side, under my ribs.  It was an annoying pain that was just there but got worse that evening.  Enough for me to take 2 advil.  I'm rarely take pain medication.  I tried stretching, etc but it was kind of there.

I did my RR on June 23 with mild/moderate discomfort in that area and really didn't push the hour run.

Pain got worse at times but then subsided as well.  Pain didn't correspond to eating.

This past weekend, the pain went from kind of dull and constant to almost non-existent but to sharp when at the top end of my breathing.  When I went for my run on Monday morning, I could only manage shallow breathing, the pain was too intense.  Resulting in a drastically slower pace (approximately 2 - 2.5 mm slower).

Went to the doctor today and he told me the pain is in the area of my gall bladder but he was kind of unsure because the pain did not increase after eating (I even had pie and ice cream and nothing).  So, I had blood tests taken and he order up an ultrasound to check things out.

I have a HIM this Saturday as I'm planning on racing IMCanada and this would be the only HIM for before the big day in August.  I would forgo this race if I had completed an HIM before but I lack experience with nutrition for such a long distance race and would like to kind of put it together in a race situation.

The doctor told me don't do anything that aggrevates the pain... well so far swimming and biking is doable but running was quite difficult.  Question is.... should I go forward with the race on Saturday with the idea of just keeping a very low heart rate and probably posting a DNF if the run is not going to work for me?  Or do I just forgo the race?  Which would leave me with never having completed a HIM and facing an IM with very little experience.

I'm hoping that this is resolved quite soon - I will have to make a decision regarding IM Canada rather quickly because it has evolved into a huge family outing where people will be travelling a from all over.

Thanks,

Michelle

  • @Michelle: When do you get the results back from the tests? I would say you really can't make a call until then. Honestly, you might be facing surgery. If that happens, your focus turns to healing. If not, then you make another plan based on what they find. Hard to say what to do until the test results are in.

    Hang in there.
  • Thanks Penny,
Canada may have a 'universal' heath care system but you have to wait for tests. I don't even know when my ultrasound will be yet and I'm probably looking at late August. Earlier if I can get in on a cancellation. My blood tests should be back this week.

I did run yesterday a a very moderate pace for an hour and 30. No pain, at least not like on Monday. Just wondering how the 'jiggling' will affect the gall bladder. Will it make it worse or cause an extreme episode?

Questions for the doc I guess. I looking at altering my diet but really I didn't have a bad one to begin with. Any suggestions?

  • As Bob Dylan once sang, "Either I'm too sensitive or else I'm getting soft."  That said, thinking about the ramifications of a gall bladder failure during a long run scares the daylights out of me. I would not being doing very much until I received some detailed medical analysis of my issues.

I prefer to live to fight another day.
