help me design a "keep your tail down' gizmo

Here's what I want: a gizmo that will beep or give me some kind of nag when my the tail of my aero helmet sticks up, or goes past, say, one or two inches from my back.

Dunno what I would need to do this.  I'm thinking Radio Shack + smart people will have the answers.

Then I want to use it, then post it on ST, make a carbon version, and sell it for hundreds of bucks to wealthy AGers.

But for now I just want to make one for myself.  Any tinkerers out there who could point me in the right direction?

  • Hm. I can feel the tail of my helmet on my grazing my back when I'm turtled in aero. Maybe just a super low-tech strip of cardboard tacking or a piece of leftover bar tape fastened to the inside of the tail of your helmet to hang down so you can feel it on your back?

If you want it to beep, there's going to have to be some tape/back circuitry that sets to break when you leave aero. There could be a whole line of custom "smart" patch kits to go with the carbon fiber version of this.

Or, even lower tech, occasionally I'll flex my neck back to touch tail to back and check helmet position.
  • It's probably cheaper to buy one of the new short tailed aero helmets... which appears to be the trend anyway.
  • tie a string from your helmet to your seat. Every time you tried to tip your aero helmet up, the string should go taught and not allow you to proceed. Total cost, about 5 cents image
  • Actually, I think velcro might be the answer. Thanks all.
  • If you are able to sell velcro to AGers for hundreds of dollars, I clearly need to adjust my reality-expectations of what people will spend their money on.
  • I think it needs to be some form of a mercury switch that allows the head to tilt X degrees but beyond X it sets off a shrieking siren directly into your ears. Needs to be carbon, have aero in the name, be ANT+ compatible, and requires another gadget to be mounted to the aerobars.
