Sunglasses recommendations

Anyone have suggestions on cycling sunglasses?  I have some Tifosi pairs, but they are getting old and hurt my nose.  Was thinking about Rudy Project.  Any styles to recommend?

  • I love my Smiths. Had them for a couple of years. Interchangeable lenses. Don't slide around on your nose and handle sweat really well.

  • I am a big fan of Oakley Radar Paths.
  • Love my Tifosi Vogel fototec....
  • I tried the Tifosi Vogel, but they didn't work for me. I like my Oakley Jawbones. Actually just ordered another pair with vented Transition lenses yesterday.
  • Oakley Jawbones. Period. Best pair of cycling glasses I've ever had. Some people don't like them because the frames SEEM a little unwieldy.

I love mine so much, that I went and bought a second pair just to have as regular sunglasses!

I've got the "transition" lenses (light to dark) as well as the normal blue/green sunglass lenses, and I swap between all of them all the time to match the conditions as well as the kit I'm wearing.
  • For the money, especially with the EN 40% discount - Rudy Projects are tough to beat. Running 2 sets of the RP Grall Fyol frames and clear, rose, yellow and traditional lenses - LOVE 'em! Not the curb appeal of Oakley's - but very funstional... look good... significantly less $.
  • x2 on the Oakley Jawbones. Fantastic cycling glasses.
  • drugstrore.   $10.      Likely to get lost or dropped or broken so not sure why folks pay big bucks for glasses.

  • Right now, Rayban Aviators - gold frame, dark green lens. Super. Cool. look. Wire frames will bend to fit them nice and snug. Plus, no one else in the peloton is doing it accept Jesse Thomas, Wildflower back to back champ.

They can be had had online for under $100. Knock offs for under $10
  • I wear Tifosi Vogels, but I favor shades without a top frame. I don't want any obstruction to my view especially in a long race where I'm looking down a fair amount of the time. Might be lifesaving some day.
  • Rudy Project Sportsmask for me
  • I'm getting to that point in life where I need bifocals to see my edge 500 or my running watch. Also, it's a pain in the rear to be driving with sunglasses, then have to fumble for my reading glasses if I need to read something in the car. There's a company that sells sports/cycling sunglasses with a bifocal lens under the name of Dual. They have a two or three models that look like they might work, and their prices are reasonable, less than $65 for a pair. The reviews are decent although not everyone is happy. Anybody out there using the Dual sunglasses? Any suggestions?
  • I wear a near contact in my left eye and a far contact in my right. But you might check these out :

I used them with success until I switched to the contacts.

  • My regular glasses are progressive to help my old eyes. But I race with contacts and typically Tifosi Fototec sunglasses. My contacts correct for far vision and I pretty can't much read anything close so I have my Edge 500 on a homemade mount out at the end of the my aerobars. It allows me to be able to read it with the advantage of not having to look down.
  • I love my Julbo Ultra glasses. I first got them for the Disney Marathon since I wanted something I could wear before sunrise and in the Florida sun. They have been great on the bike and being photochromatic I can run in sun and shade and my eyes are protected. http://www.julbousa.com/performance/ultra/

I am a bit of a sunglass slut and own just about anything that will fit my narrow face.  And I have to say- this ROCKS!  HA!  Just this morning I was reminiscing about a pair of Vaurnet Sunglasses I had in the 80's that I wish I could still find (they were "Baby Net's" and fit my face).

All that said- Tifosi is great for a relatively cheap pair that you don't have to cry about getting stolen in transition.  The Fototec also makes for a great race day option because you don't have to worry about which lenses to put in the frame- they will just adjust as necessary.  Frameless options are usually my preference for TT riding and they have several options (although I think they discontinued my favorite- which sucks).

  • Hey Rob,

Hope all is well, haven't talked to you since Lousville.  Good luck on the 100 miler.  I have used several sunglasses through the years but my choice for the last 3 years (and I can't see changing) is Smith PivLock's.  Comfortable, no rims, and interchangable lens.

  • Ever since the ToC camp I did with Rich in 2010, I've been using Oakley Jawbones. For tri races, I have a visor on my aero helmet, so I don't have to wear glasses (love that), but put them on in T2 for the run. Super comfy even then!
