Hip Flexor Strain

About a month ago I started having pain in my left hip flexor region. I attributed it to heavy workouts and tried to ignore it but it kept getting worse. A week ago during my interval run it got so bad I had to stop. I did research online and all signs point to a hip flexor strain, so I've been icing it and haven't been training at all for a week. A week completely off and the pain is still there, some days it gets better and other days worse without any overall improvement.

This has already caused me to miss one race, is endangering my participation in the SE Climbing Camp, and not to mention setting me back on my IMWI training.

I really don't want to go see to a doctor who just will run a bunch of expensive tests and give me prescription ibuprofen and tell me to not run.

My plan is to keep treating it with ice and OTC ibuprofen and not bike or run until the pain is gone. Then start back easy and see if I can build up pain-free.

Any comments/suggestions/criticisms from the haus is greatly appreciated.

  • Good advice in the article, however I would hold off on any stretching/massage until some of the inflammation has come down. Ice baths or a cold pack should help and get a hold of some topical stuff like Voltaren. Have a look at when you first started to notice symptoms, did you changed anything? Bike fit? Are you sitiing more at work? Are you doing a good dynamic warm-up before you run & bike?
