2012 Boulder Peak
Quick Boulder Peak recap. This is a terrific near-Olympic distance race (Bike is 42K).with 1400 ft of elevation gain in the first 7 miles. Then, the remainder is either downhill or flat, and is very, very fast.
I've done this race almost every year since I moved here in 2004. My typical modus operandi in this (and other triathlons) alsways seemed to be to finish mid-pack in the swim, gain some gruond on the bike, and then watch the parade of my fellow AGers go past me on the run. After Lake Placid in 2010, I began an outseason focused on the run. In early 2011 I saw some decent test and racing results, but then it was all derailed when I suffered a setback with an achilles injury and didn't get to carry my training through the 2011 tri season. I did this race last year, but was unable to run at all for more than 6 weeks priot to the race. I was super thrilled about my bike results, but I was disappointed that I didn't have the training in my run to back up the bike.
This year was to be my chance to see two things. First, I'd finally get to see what 2 years of focused run training could do, and second, I'd get to see how the addition of more biking (including road races and crits) might improve my strength on the bike. I was not disappointed.
This year produced a PR for me in both the bike and the run. I had the third fastest bike split in the M40-44 AG and held onto 6:37/mi for the 10K to finish in just under 41 minutes. The freaks of nature who won the top 2 spots in the AG both beat my split and still managed sub-6 min. miles for the 10K... oh yeah, and not to mention their low 20's swim splits. FAST!
