Drinking expired Endurox?

Calling nutrition gurus...

Anybody know any deleterious effects from drinking expired Endurox?  I have some expired (2 yr ago) Endurox R4.  I had some the other day and...  I didn't die.  It didn't taste/look much different from its non-expired state,(realized how expired it was after the fact) but I wasn't sure if protein or other ingredients really do spoil.

I'm leaning towards throwing it out, but it is a fair amount (two big cannisters) and I hate to have it go to waste if it is still usable.

Thanks!

  • FWIW, last season I was using gels and protein/carb recovery drink that were both expired. I couldn't really tell that they were any different from what they are like usually (ie unexpired).

Dr Penny may have a different view?
  • I don't have any scientific answer for you, but eat expired Gus or supplements and have never even thought twice about it... I too am still alive. I think once something like Endurox is in that crystalline powder form it can likely last decades with very little change to the substance or their effects. This is assuming it was stored in it's container in a closet or countertop or something and not in your shed where it would go through serious periodic temperature changes...
  • Thanks guys... I appreciate hearing your experience with this.

The only product like this I positively know goes bad are Cliff Shotblocks... they go through a metamorphosis that can result in a nutrition aide that can also remove your fillings given the cement like consistency it can devolve into :-)

  • Some of the expired Accel Gels, w/ protein, get a little "darker" when I put them into a flask. If that happens, I won't use them.

I, too, have some buckets of Endurox, that are 'past their prime', but like John said, it's crystalline form, and I believe as long as you keep it in normal room temps (no extremes either way), it should last beyond it's printed expiration date.

More than likely, Marketing tells them to stamp it earlier so you purchase more! It's all about the benjamins!
  • I do recall a post from last year with someone claiming to have major GI issues caused by an expire GU...

For me, if its a month or two expired i'll take it, if its a year expired I throw it out.

Nothing expired for key workouts or races....of course...
  • Alan - Throw it out. If the difference between making your budget for the month and not making your budget is buying a new thing of Endurox you have different issues. image The potency of some of the vitamins, etc in the Endurox will have deteriorated. More importantly, some of the ingredients in the mix do spoil after a certain amount of time. A few months is probably not an issue, a few years is just playing russian roulette.
  • I would go up to maybe 6 months of so, but not longer than that. Not worth the potential GI and other issues IMHO.
