Sacroiliac Joint Issues

About a month ago, I started feeling pain in my lower back/hip whenever I raised my knee above my hip, or bent forward.  This flares up about once a year, and has, in the past gone away within a week of its own accord.  This time, it hasn't subsided.  Over the last week, it has actually gotten worse, to the point that sitting in a chair causes pain too.  Running, especially over uneven ground, is painful, biking hurts (and the using the aerobars is out because I can't ), while swimming is also uncomfortable.

The doctor did a brief examination last week and told me that the problem was my sacroiliac joint.  He gave me some handouts with a series of 8 exercises, that I have been doing since.  It doesn't appear to have helped much.  I checked Leigh's website (http://www.athletestreatingathletes.com/), but didn't find anything addressing this problem.  I can't be the only person this has happened to.  Does anyone have advice?

  • Hi Michael,

I injured my SI Joint playing hockey...Didnt know it until my hip starting hurting while running (right side only). After visting the doctors and many months of rehab with no luck, i finally went to a chiropractor. He adjusted the SI joint (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhwECwj3LDI). He said it was loudest he had ever heard when it popped back into place. The problem was instantly gone. My Answer was Chiropractic. Good luck
  • Agree with Rob. Get it manipulated. Much quicker and then do the exercises given. There also may be some concurrent muscle tightness ( piriformis, quadratus, and upper lumbar paraspinals).
  • Thanks! I will look into the chiropractic route and let you know.

  • I have the same problem. Get it put back into alignment then do the exercises. If you know a PT he/she should be able to do it, too. Or a chiro.
  • I have SI joint issues as well, I can feel the right side getting tight then within days the pain starts. I also go to a chiropractor, I find going for a nice easy run helps to loosen the muscles up pre appointment if you are able, my chiro uses a heat pad to further relax the muscles as well. I have been to chiros in the past that try to adjust the joint cold and I get nowhere except help twisted and in more pain. Keeping on  top of this one is important as having an SI joint out of alignment causes problems in all three sports, as we lose mobility and strength in the core. Good luck!
