IMLP Thursday Bike Question

For the Thursday Recon, I'm thinking of doing the Keene descent (get dropped off around Mt. van Hoevenburg, get picked up in Keene) then getting dropped off in Wilmington and doing the last ~14 miles of the course back to the Courtyard.

Does this sound like a good plan?  Also, looking for company if anyone else is interested.

  • That sound about right, just make sure not to be out there too long.  You could even do the last 10-12 miles in to LP.

The descent is not really or it does not have to be work, but you want to be comfortable with the speed you choose.  It's good to find out how fast you can handle the descent with limited number of people on the course.  Depending upon when you come out of the water, I'm slow but it can get very crowded with all the athletes with different skill levels going down the hill.

I'm not sure when I'll be doing my ride yet so can't commit to joining.

  • Keep in mind there are other folks there "Training" for races beyond IMLP, so don't be riding along with them....
for the decent, wise words from Patrick are to Pick a position and stick with it until you get to the bottom i.e. aero or on the hoods, choose at the top.

Gordon is right, the decent isn't work physically, just more like a roller-coaster ride...would keep it to 30 minutes MAX...IMO.
  • Hey Rob,
what time are you thinking of doing this ? I want to do similar but wont be arriving in LP til about 2pm....
  • Those two sections would be good ones to preview if you have not been on the course yet - the steep decent to Keene and the long climbs back to town. The crappiest sections of road surface on the course too.
  • Also remember on race day, the most hazardous section on the bike course is the section from the mount line to the bottom of the hill where the bike course meets the run course. Pretty technical and TOTALLY crowded. Also watch out as you hit the rollers across the first bridge. when it goes up, the crowd will come to a standstill with peeps flying into the back of the pack. Saw some crashes there last year, dropped chains, etc. If you are riding with a power meter and watch what you are doing, don't sweat the climbs, they are not that bad. Just be disciplined!

    Rich-

The afternoon may work.  Call my cell (856-912-9279) tomorrow when you have an idea on timing.  I'm staying at the Courtyard.
