Racine 70.3 Race Report -HR Troubles

Race Report Racine 70.3

First the good…Lots of EN kits out there. I met a lot of folks. Very cool. Great people. I don’t have a kit yet…but look forward to having one for the next race!!

Racine 70.3 overall. Great race, tons of racers, props to Ironman…lovem or hatem, I don’t think anybody does it better!    Bike course a little rough but…other than that…well done!

Now the bad…

I was Standing quietly, calmly holding my wetsuit.   About  a ¼ mile from the swim start waiting for my wave to start in 50 minutes…I check my heart rate. It was 97! Ninety seven!!!    My normal resting/standing Hr is 68-70.(im one of those geeks that check HR often…don’t know why…just do)   I tried to lower it by laying down…got it down to 82.   Somethings up…

I swam easily in 37 min, I felt ok…but when I got to the wetsuit strippers  my HR was over 170!   This is just crazy…170 is my heart rate  for V02 intervals or 3x1600’s.   Something is very wrong.

On the bike…I cut my target watts by 20-25….I could not get my HR down…I struggled all bike.   I finished 22 watts below RR targets.    2:49 bike.  i am laboring.

Run- I managed to get 2.5 miles before I flagged for medical help and then a trip to the medical tent to get body temp down. Race over.

Everything is cool...im good to go.  but i must say...my confidence level is pretty low.  I have IM wisconsin coming up.  I dont want this to happen there.  I dont know what caused it so i feel pretty lost.

I don’t mind race execution or fitness problems…because I  can fix those….but im clueless about the extreme elevated HR and what one does about it.

Anyone with expierence and suggestions?...I welcome all input.

Thanks!

  • First replace the batteries in both the strap and the receiving unit. Sometimes HR monitors can increase the HR by a 33 or 50% factor, EG sometimes my HR will show 180 when it is really 120.

If it's not a tech issue, then get a medical eval to find out if you have something going on in heart conduction, like supra-ventricular tachycardia, etc.
  • Al,

Im pretty sure the strap is good. Its been reading normal for the last few days. I did google tachycardia....very interesting subject. It covers a multiple possible causes that range from dehydration to stress... Good stuff.

    Thanks for the tip!

  • Rob,

Glad you are ok.  Smart call to withdrawl and race another day.

One other possible technical glitch.  More than once I've had my Garmin 310 XT pick up another person's HR reading.  It has happened when there are lots of other people wearing HR monitors around me, like at the start of a race.  However, it usually comes back to a normal reading for the RPE that I'm at after about 15-20 minutes.  It just seems to take awhile.  So now if it is reading 170 when I know I'm putting out 125 bpm effort, I kind of ignore it for a few minutes.   Let me say again this has only happened at the start of a race or large group run when there multiple people with HR straps sending out signals close together.  If I'm all alone, and it gave me an abnormally high number, I pay would attend right now.
