salty sweaters?

I have become quite the salty sweater within the last year.  I never used to be.  What do you guys think could be going on?

  • Most likely related to increased sodium in your diet. If you do preloading of Electrolytes before big workouts that could be the difference too. More salt in -> more salt out. I'm a very salty sweater, and am realizing I  need to start bringing down my daily intake to correct for that. I'm not really sure where it all comes from though, since we do a good job of eating heathly home cooked non processed foods.

  • X2 on what Rian said! Try to reduce sodium in the daily diet w/o changing your sodium load for long hot workouts or races. I.e., low salt on a regular basis and high salt when you need it.
  • One of two or a combination of them:
    1) More sodium in your diet or in your sports drinks
    2) Your body is adapting to put out more salt.
  • ok - this is good stuff to think about.  I think my diet does have a bit more salt in it than it used to.  I'll try cutting back for a whie and see how that goes...  Thanks!!

  • If you start cramping that means you need the additional sodium.
  • No cramps.  Guess this just means I need to cut back on the salt in my diet.    I think it's mostly from my new found love of guac.  I'll switch to corn cortillas instead of chips...

  •  Penny, where is the research on electrolytes and cramping? I keep hearing there is no conclusive evidence that electrolytes have any effect on inhibiting/prohibiting muscle cramping.

  • Rian: I'm on vacation now. I can post some of it when I get back. You can also search pubmed.
  •  Well....  It worked.  Less chips.  Less salt out on my rides.  yay.

  •  Oooff, sounds like a big price to pay Julia!  I love guac and chips.....

  • Me too!! SIGGGH.

  • More chips for me!! Salty sweat isn't BAD by any means....assuming you aren't having guac every night...
  •  Coach P, this is an excellent point!!  No - definitely no guac every night!  The mexican-ish bent occurs once or twice a week at my place because it's relatively quick and easy after a day of whatever (work, training, etc).  And it's an easy gluten free-dairy free way to go that doesn't make by boyfriend go  (as he can have both and is understandably wary of all this alternative stuff).
