Trouble keeping swim pace in week 17

 Hey,

To any swim pace gurus...

I've been having trouble keeping up with my T-pace in my swims over the past 2 weeks. My T-pace is 1:30, and on longer sets (400s and 500s), it's been a struggle to maintain 1:32. I'm in week 17 of HIM training, and I can't tell if this is just cumulative fatigue that's slowing me down, or if my technique is mysteriously wasting away as I get closer to race day. Any thoughts on this? Is this a normal phenomenon a few weeks out?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Lisa

  • If you've previously been able to maintain pace in similar sets, fatigue is probably the cause. With fatigue your form will suffer and so too will your time. Sounds like yiu're close to race date and taper time. I would say keep swimming with emphasis on maintaining technique. Practice pushing thru the fatigue using good form. Kind of like that last 2-300 meters of the 1.2 mile swim.
  •  Fatigue.

Or.  Maybe have someone look at your technique.    Just before last race wife told me that i lost the back end of my stroke.    Lost it on swimming the mindless meters.     Now it is back and i am speedier.

  • IMHO-  I wouldn't even worry about it...week 17 it is most likely macro fatigue related...and your only talking about 2 seconds/100...I loose 2 seconds just finding my watch : )

Seriously....As long as generally your not experience fatigue related issues across all disciplines...then you might need a little slowdown...generally.

  • +1 on this being the time when you are supposed to feel the most tired. It will pass, as long as you follow the taper protocol.

  • Thanks everyone. Sounds like a chill pill is in order!!! (and attention more to form than a silly 2 seconds).
    Thanks!!!!!
  • X2 on Joe 2/100 of a sec. I'm off by 10 sec and I'm just plain tired.
