IMLP advice?

I signed up for IMLP 2013 and have a couple questions.

1. Any recommendations on hotels/lodging?

2. While it's fresh to all of you that raced last weekend...any general comments or suggestions? Must go places, must do things? I'll be there with family (they live in CT) and my wife and kids. And also race-related?

I'm already reading the race reports and look forward to more of them.

Thanks,

Brian

  • Hello Brian,

    1. Stay as close to town as possible. The hotel costs (and their 5 night minimums) are a total rip off but unavoidable. The alternative is staying out of town and spending your time shuttling back and forth from the race venue. Book your room now. The Best Western is directly across from the venue. The Pines is at the edge of town, well removed from the venue but closer to shopping/Main St., etc. Art Devlin's is popular as well.
    2. Avoid camping out at all costs. Bad idea.
    3. Let your family know IN ADVANCE that this weekend and the few days leading up to it are all about you. Family can be a distraction and their presence can add unwanted stress if you don't set some ground rules. That said, it's a great idea to stay an extra day or two and see some sights with them when you are more relaxed after the race. I recommend a drive up Whiteface Mountain. If you go to LP to train before the race I highly recommend you ride your bike up Whiteface.
    4. Travel Wednesday. Thursday latest.
Hope that helps. See you out there!
  •  Hi Brian,

I just got back from LP last night.  I stayed at the Courtyard, which had a 5 night minimum. No complaints other than it would have been nice to have a kitchen area.  Another option if you're partial to Hilton properties, they have just broken ground on a Hampton Inn which will be right next to the swim start, literally maybe 400 feet from the beach.  The sign says it will be opening in the spring of 2013.

Hoping to get my race report done within a day or two.

  • If you don't want to go with a hotel, there are a multitude of condo complexes and houses for rent in the area. If you have family coming, a condo or house lets the kids or whoever have a different room than you, which may help with sleep. You also have a kitchen to cook your own food vs. buying a family breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday---this equals out the cost some. I have stayed at the some condos just out of town on the actual Lake Placid and it was fine getting into town (about a 5 minute drive). This past week, Scott D and I rented a house .7 miles from the oval and just walked everywhere.
  • I stayed at the Maple Leave Inn for 2011. It was a small hotel room that got the job done for my wife and then 3 year old. Can walk to T1 and the cost was reasonable. Believe it was only a 4 night minimum. There is a pool to hang out in. No kitchen, small fridge, older but clean. owners were very nice.

They may have larger rooms for your family and believe they also have rooms with kitchens.

Not a high end option but a good one still. And to be honest, when I was looking for housing I was pretty desperate to get something and this is what I found.

If you have a larger Group coming to the race I would consider staying a little ways out of town and having someone drop you off in the morning. As small as Lake Placid town is, during race week parking is pretty manageable. Actually even on Race day, my family was able to park in town during the day. If you do your last workouts earlier during the day you should be able to park right near mirror lake.
  • You might check vrbo.com. We've used it a lot to rent condos and houses when we travel.

    Brian,

Penny's vbro.com suggestion is good.  I just did the Courtyard as well, but will probably do a house next time so we can cook and have a bigger area to relax.  If you're not familiar with LP, you may want to do a weekend there this summer/fall to ride the course and scout the town.  The fam will appreciate a house they can walk back/forth to on race day.
