Califorina Info Plz

I'm looking to go to Vegas in Jan 2013 for a few days. I will drive to LA on a Tue to sight see with the wife spend the night and the following day. Thur I will make my way up to SF via PCH and I want to stay about 3/4 of the way to SF. We will be stopping along the way to sight see so I don't want to burn out with a 8hr plus hour drive straight shot.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to where that location would be along PCH ?

Thx D

  • Suggest you drive to Santa Barbara and start the coast from there. Even then, it doesn't get really good until north of Morro Bay. From there I think you are about 130 miles to Monterrey, which would be a great place to stop. In other words, if it were me, I'd get to Morro Bay by the most direct route and then take my time driving north from there. If you pass by Solvang on the 101, drop in and get some struedel

  • Santa Barbara is a wonderful town. Further north is San Luis Obispo, a much smaller, but cute town. Solvang is a tad out out of the way, but if you have the time, stop in! Some great wineries in the area too image. If you want to stay on the coast, Pismo Beach is a one street town, but it's right on the water and there are a bunch of reasonably priced hotels on the strip.
  • You can stay in Carmel, that's a nice upscale town with a great beach and some beautiful local scenery (17-mile drive). It should be about 3/4 up from LA to S-F.
  • Thx Ben, I'm still looking to stay some place Hollywoodish, WLA or Santa Monica as we travel from LV we need a place to stay and see some of the LA sights.

Anybody else live around there chime in please.
  • David, if you stay in Santa Barbara and have time, rent a bike from Santa Barabara Bikes to Go and go up in the mountains. They rent nice road bikes, and there are some excellent climbs you can do a just a few hours. It's really beautiful scenery.

+1 on SB Bikes to Go. That's owned by Joe O'Flaherty, a former Crucible Fitness coaching client of mine and good friend. Joe worked the Tour of California for us in 2010. Tell me I sent you and said hi

Many many places to stay, depending on what activities you want and budget. If you want to be closer to the beach, then I'd recommend Santa Monica; The Viceroy is outstanding, but $$$. If you're willing to be a little more removed from LA proper, and spend a bit more - there is a very nice resort in Palos Verdes called Terrenea. If you want to stay closer to or in LA proper, there are many name brand hotel choices there. If you're looking to splurge, there is a Four Seasons in Marina Del Rey, a Ritz Carlton downtown or the Beverly Hilton in Brentwood/Beverly Hills.

If you want more specifics, happy to help - but what do you want to do/see while here?

  • @ Sarah. Thank you for the information but me and the wife are on a time limit and she doesn't bike appreciate the help.

@ R, thank you for allowing me to drop a name, ha..is that a good thing ?

@ Tim, we are driving from Vegas after a brief stay there heading to LA to tourist it up for 1.5 days . We are not high end folks MOP at best. So nice clean a decent safe area. We want to drive through Hollywood walk around some go up SM Blvd hit Beverly Hills Rodao drive onto SM muscle beach. A full day of sightseeing some dinner andgo up PCH towards SF the next day. So 2 nights... any information would be appreciated thank you.

No problem. For what you want to do, I would definitely stay in Santa Monica. It's close to the W LA/Hollywood sights, has the pier (some tacky fun), the ocean and beach and is also at the the end of the 10 Freeway (from Vegas) where it meets PCH (road to Santa Barbara and points north).

A quick Hotels.com search yielded these:
    http://www.hotels.com/search.do?destination=Santa+Monica,+California,+United+States&searchParams.arrivalDate=12/26/12&searchParams.departureDate=12/31/12&rooms=1&searchParams.rooms[0].numberOfAdults=2&children[0]=0&asaReport=HomePage::City&destinationId=1485675&searchParams.landmark=&hotelId=

Just put in your own dates. Rooms will be a little more expensive in town, esp in Jan if it is MLK weekend. My recommendations, in no particular order: (1) Viceroy (2) Loews Santa Monica; and (3) Oceana Beach Club. There is also a Holiday Inn at the Pier as well as a Mariott not too far in town. SM has the great 3d Street Promende as well as a fantasitic farmers' market.

The original muscle beach is actually in Venice, just south of SM, walkable - but I wouldnt recommend staying in Venice, personally (just IMO).

As far as a Hollywood tour, any of the hotel concierges at the recommended properties could give you a good map if you want to drive yourself, or almost certainly recommend a tour company - which might be better and/or safer than trying to navigate the hills (and local cyclists!) while looking out the window at stuff.

One last plug, I took my wife on a helicopter tour of LA/Hollywood/Beaches for a special anniversary a few yrs ago. It was not cheap (~ $1000), but was a totally cool thing to do. Since you'll have a car, you could easily drive to SM airport or Woodley airport in Compton where many of the tours fly. You can do a quick internet search for discounts and/or ask at your hotel.

    Hope this helps!
