Quarq question (2 bikes)

Looking into purchasing a quarq and saving some cash to make said purchase.  One of the BIG things I want to be able to do is use it on both my bikes since according to youtube and leonard zinn changing a crank is really easy

So this is what I have

2011 Specialized Transition, 2010 Look 566

Obviously I would be purchasing a compact in a crank arm length that fits me, i'd probably just match my road bike b/c it's a compact but could I use the crank on both bikes and if so, what else would I need to find out / purchase?

  • The one and only concern is the bottom bracket. I'm pretty sure both the 2011 Spec Transition and 2010 Look use GXP BB... but check to be sure. If so, buy the Quarq in GXP and you'll be fine. It would be an issue if one of your bikes was BB30 and the other was GXP.
  • As Bob said, bottom bracket match is the key. I have two bikes and switched one of the cranksets out for GXP from Shimano when I got the Quarq. Now swaps take about 5 minutes to go between bikes.
Even if one of your bikes has BB30 you can get an adapter to allow for the GXP to fit, just remember it doesn't work the other way around so don't get a BB30 Quarq if one of your bikes is not a BB30.

  • Jamie,

just repeating what others have said....
I do the same thing that you're looking to do.

Right now- on my road bike, quarq compact cranks with the GXP bottom bracket, cycleops spd/cadence sensor, Joule 2.0.

BUT- I switch over to my tri bike once a week. I purchased an extra GXP bottom bracket so that both bikes have the same. Switching the cranks from bike to bike is really ez.

As it is, I do have to switch my joule mount and spd/cadence sensor, too, when I move the quarq. But, I keep a ton of zip ties around so that isn't painful at all. I do hope to pick up an extra mount and spd/cadence sensor soon so that I can eliminate this extra step.

  • Chris,

If you've got a quarq - you need a cadence magnet not a sensor, unless you use it for the speed part.
  • no matter what Bottom Brackets you have today, I highly recommend buying a GXP quarq. As others have said a GXP S9XX can be adapted to fit pretty much any BB standard (traditional threaded, BB30, PF30, BB90, BB86, BBright, etc). If you buy a BB30 quarq than you are limited in your options for future bikes. Of course, the best part about the S9XX series quarq is you can always just pick up another S9XX crank if you want a different spindle or lengh crank arm.

Also, like Chris, I recommend getting a GXP BB for each bike so literally all you have to do is swap the crank with one 8mm bolt. Ask quarq for an extra magnet ring when you order it so you have magnet for each bike.

FWIW, I do not have a speed sensor as I see no point to it if you have a computer with GPS. If you have a Joule, well then you either need a speed sensor (or to buy a better computer ;-) ). I don't care at all about speed on the trainer (or outside for that matter), power and cadence are what matter.
