I guess I'm the outlier so far... I end up changing mine like 3x a yr. I've had my PT in the beginning of a 145 mile ride before and I don't want that happening again. So no matter what, I change them out before my Ironman. I also change them in the spring and usually one other time. Batteries are cheap, waste them...
CycleOps claims that batteries are supposed to last around 400 hours of riding time for a PT hub, but of course there's a bit of variance in that depending on the batteries you use and how long you keep the bike sitting around. Should be pretty easy to figure out when is a reasonable time to change batteries if you've been keeping a training log of your hours.

Six to nine months of EN type use...maybe 200-250 hours?

Nope, just make sure the Hub is still paired (shows watts when you pedal) - it shouldn't unpair though.
