You have GOT to be kidding me!

5 times I've signed up for IM Boulder 70.3 (this year makes 6) and each time I've not finished due to injury or planned DNF.  Now, I might not make the starting line.  I'm in perfect condition... Run has come around... I KNOW I would PR and hit my sub 5 goal, and what happens?  I go out for an easy run... nothing strenuous (MP intervals), and 1.5 miles in, my right quad suddenly feels like someone stabbed me with a large, dull needle.  Now, any sudden moves or attempts to run, and I have a stabbing pain.  Can barely walk stairs (up or down)... My race is Sunday.

I swear I'm snakebit with this race!!!

  • Sorry to hear steve,

Ice, ART, Accupuncture - have you tried anything ?
  • I'm with Cary. Have you tried everything????
  • R.I.C.E. and self-massage thus far. It only happened 20 hours ago, so I'm not yet convinced I won't be racing if I just stay off it. Still tight and sore this morning, though. image
  • Thigh seems to be coming around. Still a little tender, but MUCH better than Tuesday. Compression sleeve, ice, massage/the stick and rest seem to be working. If I continue to improve through tomorrow, I'm giving it a shot. Thanks guys.
  • Run was a no-go today. I felt like I might make it yesterday, but less than half a mile into the run, and I felt the twinges and tightness that preceded the injury on Monday. Immediately called it a day, as I don't want to go backwards. Someday, I'll finish this race.
  • Sorry to hear Steve.
  • Find a good ciropractor!
  • Sorry to hear about your race (I just saw this now).
FWIW, a very similar thing happened to me on the Thursday before IMLP this year. I did RICE and stretching - along with complete rest - but what really helped was a visit to the ART tent. A side benefit was that it also addressed a long-term problem in the Achilles on the other leg. Thereapist traced both issues to hip and alignment issues.
Bottom line is that I finished the IM in my goal time (albeit slow) and without pain during the race or since.
Of course this is a N of 1 and all caveats apply.
    Good luck!
