Arm Coolers

I am looking for recommendations for some good arm coolers to use at Louisville. Anybody got some tips on brands, models, sizing, etc?  Thanks!

  • @Dan — I use De Soto "Cool Wings' and really like them.
Also we get an EN discount

  •  I've used both Craft and DeSoto in IMs. I much prefer the craft ... They are very thin, light weight, and have a better "feel". They are very form fitting, asymmetrically shaped (L and R specific) and use both sweat and added water to do a good job cooling. If it Is wetsuit legal, they are so thin, they will not be at all bulky under full sleeve neoprene

  • I have the EN logo pearl izumi ones, and like them.
  • I have the EN Pearls too and love them.

I have these also, but compared to the others I mentioned, they are not really "coolers"

  • I'd like to point to EN's own Beth Schwindt's post about arm coolers: http://btothes.wordpress.com/2012/0...m-coolers/

And FWIW - my PI cooler work great.

  • I have the PI coolers, and they seem to work reasonably well. They are slightly thicker than the De Soto coolers though. I'm tempted to try training/racing with a pair of De Soto coolers just because I like the feel of the material better, but I think the slightly thicker PI sleeves might do a better job of giving a bit more sun protection if that's a concern.
  • @ Dan - I think that arm coolers are legit. PI, DeSoto, Craft.....can't go wrong with any of those brands.

But, do it. don't save the pennies here. Dump cold water on 'em as often as possible. Dump cups of ice into the in inside of the upper parts, around the brachial artery. Don't schedule it, not a ''do it at X minutes'' kind of thing. It's a "do it as often as possible'', ''every opportunity'' kind of thing.

I've used the DeSoto's. Biggest day for me was a crazy 'just cuz' event I did for charity 2 years ago. 24 hrs and 300 miles on a 100 degree July day. And, although I'm just a n of 1, my experience is that they helped A TON!

    Pull the trigger.

One tip based on my stuff....if your brand has sticky elastic trim around the openings at the TOP of the arm, use some body glide on your lateral chest, just under your armpit, where your arm might rub a little on the chest. I had a very bad blister/burn on my left chest from 24 hrs of rubbing. FWIW.

  • I have the EN PI ones and they were awesome at Lake Placid. At one point I rolled them down because I thought they were making me warmer....not, rolled them right back up 5 seconds later.
  • Used mine at Vineman. Garden hose soaking every mile. Totally worth it. Especially as I passed walkers talking about overheating.
  • If the swim is not wetsuit-legal, do you put the arm coolers on in T1? Are they hard to get on while wet from the swim?
  • I've used EN Pearl Izumi sun sleeves for IMAZ and also in last year's crazy hot Boston Marathon. I got them wet before the race started and thought my arm was turning to ice. It's really incredible what these things are able to do.
